Weather Conditions 1/4/20 WINDY!
Windy conditions are going to prevail today, with winds inland getting up to 16 -18 MPH. Usually, you can add about 5 mph to predict the gusts at the pier, so the surf is likely to be really beastly today! Don't be surprised at the lack of fishing reports because super-windy conditions in January make it practically unfishable.
It would be great if the Gulf would calm down and big whiting and sheepshead would return at least one more time before the renovation begins in 12 days (on Jan. 16). My thinking is that in any event, there are thousands MORE whiting that will winter-over this year and be that much more plentiful and bigger for next fall/winter! Possibly, as well, flounder and pompano not caught in the early spring will make the pier area their home.
In preparation for the transition to beach fishing, I'm planning on getting another sand spike rod holder and some more Salty's Pompano Rigs https://www.facebook.com/SaltyFishingProducts/
It's not my preferred way of fishing, but it will be good for me to become a little more versatile when it comes to fishing methods.

I like to surf fish at least a few days during spring break when the scenery can be inspiring and outstanding. Remember to use a long surf rod to keep your line way up in the air so they don't have to walk around behind you and cause you to fall out of your chair as you twist around to make sure you saw what you thought you saw. That's embarrassing, especially if they offer to help you back up into your chair like a doddering old fool. I ain't started to dodder yet.
Oh, yeah, pompano fishing can get pretty good that time of year, too. It's always fun to catch fish with an appreciative audience around.

Well darn! Now that the real motive about surf fishing has been exposed, I think it only fair that photos be provided.

Tom, we really enjoyed hearing you two tonight at Post 44. We have heard you before at the Elks Club, but you were in particularly good voice tonight. That was as fine a rendition of "You Were...
