I've been known to use a 706 for trout and small Spanish :abnormal::p (overkill I know) but if you are going with a bailed reel, then the battle is a great real, other than the Ci4, I'm not very impressed with the shimomos, Cant handle salt worth a flip in my experience.........Penn on the other hand has never sold me anything I haven't been entirely satisfied with (now Ive never bought a Pursuit), but then again, my 3000 and 4000 reels have a tendency to hook into ALOT of jacs
I've had a shimano sedona 4000 since 2007 and would still be working fine if my father in law hadn't stepped on it. I had to learn the hard way about laying a rod on the ground...but anyway, I have a lot of shimanos and have never had any problems. They aren't Penns but they get the job done IMO. To the original poster, can't remember the name, I don't know what you said your budget was but Penn Slammer 3000/4000 is an awesome little reel, Shimano Sedona 4000, Shimano Sahara 4000, Penn Battle, Fierce, Sargus are all good reels. Some Quantums are decent but I've heard they don't hold up well.Quote:

AU, since you are in the market for a rod too, John's reply about the combos is 'spot on'.
The most important consideration for a combo IMHO is that it be 'balanced'.
That is to mean the line rating for both is a similar range as well as the overall weight feels comfortable for the job you intend.
And Penn's combos are well priced considering the combo is usually only $20 more than the reel by itself.

Take a look at the new Penn Conflict reels. They look really good. Made in all sizes.
The Conflict is essentially a 'glamour remake' of the Battle IMHO,Quote:

all my experiences with shimano have been horrible they usually get corroded very easily and are really cheaply made. on the other hand a penn will hold up very well against salt water i dont care what kind of penn they all last forever just an example the greenies and z's series are old reels and still hold up great and are used by alot of people still today. battles IMO are very good dependable reels. if you do get a shimano make sure you rinse it off every time after you get done fishing. but the same gos for every rod and reel anyway lol.
