That would be my Spanish Mackerel rod. It would likely handle school-sized kings, too!
Sounds good to me! I've got it mated to a Spinfisher 4500 for the time being. I'm hoping I can get at least one morning on the pier when I come down Labor Day weekend (not my choice) and I figure that my 10' surf rod would look a little funny on the pier.

Well, it's a Spinfisher V4500 spooled with 12# Big Game mono. So that's 185 yds of mono with 25 lbs of drag to hold it. Between all of y'all's advice and the guys a J&M hooking me up with the correct rigs/jigs, I think I should be good go.

(12# line) + (25# drag) = snap
Agreed, 125 yards of 12# is fine for Spanish, but under-gunned for most kings. If it was 250 yards of 12#, you would be ok unless you hooked a biggun..Quote:

I put 20# braid on my Battle II 4000 and got close to 280 yds on it. At least that's what I paid for, and they don't hardly make mistakes. 15# braid would give you even more.

Don't over complicate this If you are going to limit your rods stay within your capacity and you'll enjoy it more I'm a firm believer that to adequately fish the Pier for all fish you need at least two combos One with 150-200 yds of 10-12 lb mono This will be your best all purpose combo and if I was restricted to one combo this would be it You could catch anything on the Pier or Surf with this except probably Kings and Jacks Even Reds as they don't make that long of a run No need to over complicate your line either I use Bass Pro Shop Excel mono $9.95 for 1500 yds Have for 40 years and have caught everything with it If you want to fish for kings get you a 5000 or 6000 reel with at least 300 yd capacity on a good 9ft rod I use 16 lb mono on mine Use a braid backing if you have to to get the capacity You'll have a better chance of landing them and enjoy yourself more being properly equipped As with fishing " Match The Hatch " to catch fish Match your equipment to what you are after and you'll have more chance of success and enjoy it more
Couldn't agree more, you really need at least two combos, a 3000/4000 series for Spanish, blues, slot reds, etc.., and a king/jack/bull red size (6000) combo.
And a bait rod.
And a second king rod with a lure.
And a second Spanish rod with a looney or gotcha.
As far a braid goes, just make sure to get something bright so the rest of us can see it.

The closest and probably best choice for the pier fishing is the Gulf Shores State Pier. You will want to investigate the ferry schedule between Dauphin Island and Ft. Morgan, otherwise you'll have to drive back up to Mobile, across the bay and back down through Baldwin County, which is a pretty long drive doing it both ways for a day trip.
If you use your NC pier tackle, you will find yourself way over-gunned. Good luck.
There is good surf/shore bases fishing on DI, especially if you make the walk out to the Katrina Cut rocks.
