Advice from the vets

My wife and I (both teachers) come down to the Gulf and stay in our camper for a few weeks out of the summer for the last five years, along with some weekends during the school year. We live in Hattiesburg, Mississippi and I do some wade fishing for specks and reds inshore on the Mississippi coast, but my favorite is flounder. I have been to the pier a few times but never to fish, I mainly fished on Little Lagoon though. I would like to target some flounder, I have seen some decent size ones swimming around just looking off from the pier. What are some tips you guys could give me about what to use, and how to fish it. Normally when I wade I will use a jig head with a Berkley Gulp shrimp, or live shrimp. Thanks for any advice! Looking forward to fishing the pier this year!

Welcome to the board. Spent a few years in the classroom myself until I decided there were easier ways to make a living.

Not that I consider myself an expert by any means, but that said, you've got the right idea - just add bull minnows to the mix. Fish finder rig with a flouro leader under enough egg sinker to get it all down and not get washed away. Slow bump along the bottom and work the bottom around the pilings. How much weight is enough? More than not enough and less than too much - just depends on the wind and current conditions.

3" Gulp in New Penny and red jig head (1/4-3/8) do pretty well.
More bang for the buck on the bull minnows and Gulps - pinfish are hell on live shrimp.

everything stated above, but i personally had the best luck with 4" pearl swim mullet on a chartuse head. caught quite a few reds and specks by accident just letting it sink to the bottom.
