Thread: line capacity ??

Looking to bring my son and myself to the pier to fish. We are from kansas but I have been there as a visitor before just watching and mentally taking notes. my questions are these.

from what I've seen most rod reel combos with decent reels can handle most basic fishing either from the pier or from the surf. What # line and line capacity on a reel should we go with?

A lot depends on what you are fishing for. If you are after kings, jack crevalle and bull reds, you need a reel that will hold appx. 300 yds of 15# - 20# line. If you are going to use braid, use a heavier test so it will be easier to get out tangles.

For Spanish, blues, ladyfish, speckled trout, slot reds, flounder, etc., your bass tackle will be just fine---10#-12# test and 150 yds of line, mono preferred. You will not be subject to arrest by the fishing police if you go outside these guidelines.

As far as reels, a 6000 class on a 7.5 to 8 ft. rod will be great for bigger fish (not so heavy to fish with all day) and 3000 or 4000 class on 6.5 to 7 ft. rod for smaller fish (I love my Battle 400 II).

Not counting sharks-n-rays, general purpose for everything but King Mackerel, Jacks and Tarpon, 150 yards or better of 10-12# will catch'em.
Even the 12# will work for small-medium Kings if you've 300 yards or better, but you'd be better off with 300+ of 15-20# and could catch almost anything.
Some people finesse the Specks and Flounder with line as light as 6-8#, but 10# is okay.
Very important to bring various leader line materials, 12-15# floro, 40-60# mono and some 30# wire as lots of fish here are very toothy critters.
LOL, don't attempt to lip any fish unless you like bleeding.
