Just wondering on the live bait catching if any is available yet?
A few days have passed since I tried, but when I tried a Sabiki I had no luck. I did not try yesterday as it did not look promising at all.
We just need some dang warm weather.
All the down lights working will help also.
All I've seen so far is a few squid, some large glass minnows (anchovies), and bunches of silver perch ("sweet trout")...
Today on the pier a guy offered me some dead and half dried out LYs as bait.
I was intrigued cause I hadn't seen any 'bait fish' other than small Pinfish, White trout and Croaker.
Jeff Bearden stepped over and said they caught some LYs on sabikis yesterday too.
Winter is only slowly releasing it's chilly grip ;-)
New comer to pier fishing. Coming down 4-17-18. Confused. What are LYs? I thought that was short for Looney jigs? Any help appreciated. This is a great forum and thanks to all who contribute!
LY=Scaled Sardine
Attachment 7152
LY is slang for alewife which is a northern Atlantic baitfish which looks somewhat similar. That’s what I understand anyway. Someone correct if I have it wrong.
People USE "LY" (pronounced "EL WY") to describe, like CarlF said, a scaled sardine. The name comes from a corruption/mispronunciation of a misidentification. It's not an alwife, but the term dates back to before people could just look these things up online. For no good reason (other than common language) , even though almost everyone knows better, folks keep calling the scaled sardine by its colloquial name. Maybe since the pier is a "fishing and education pier", they can put up big picture-signs of the scaled sardine, with all of the scientific information about the species, since the species figures so prominently into The Gulf Shores Pier Fishing Experience.
Thanks everyone for the LY explanation! I am no longer confused on the issue from here in Cain-Tuck-E!
Yesterday, Thurs., it was no problem to get an LY with a ribbon rig just north of the octi. Oh, happy day!

I can make a call next week and see if we can work on a "common baitfish" sign for the pier!
I had often wondered what that term actually meant.
A mispronounced name for a misidentified species. Would not make sense anywhere else - makes perfect sense here. lol.
