Has anyone ever tried ardent reel butter for greasing reels? I bought some a few weeks ago because it was all they had locally, but I'm finding that its pretty stiff stuff. My reels are smooth, but definitely not easy cranking the way I like them to be.
I just use trailer bearing grease if I don't have a tube of Penn reel grease handy.
While working at Bass Pro I used it a few times lubing reels after the packaging had become damaged.
It lubed OK but did seem a bit 'stiffer' than Penn grease.
I wish I had used bearing grease. I don't have any doubt that the reel butter is protecting/cushioning/lubricating, but if I'm having to push the handle to make it turn there had better be a fish on the end of my line. Everything has been checked, nothing is rubbing or tight. The only change is the reel butter.Quote:

most of the stiffness is probably coming from the bearing that I packed with the stuff. The manufacturer of the bearing gave two lubrication methods with stats- one was oiled the other was greased. The old bearing was just oiled, and I was thinking that more cushion would be better- not so. live and learn.
Add a drop or 2 of good gun or reel oil and it should loosen up.
