I saw a thread yesterday that said some have attached rod holders to wheeled ice chests. Anyone have a picture or directions on how to do this. Hopefully without ruining the ice chest? Thanks in advance.

This is what I did. I'll try to explain. I attached my rod holder to (2) 1"X1/2" pieces of wood vertically. I don't know how long to tell you to make them, but on the back(up against the cooler)near the top of the two vertical pieces you will have to screw another piece to them horizontally. This allows the fish rods to angle out so they don't hit you while wheeling it. then strap it to your cooler using ratchet strap. Hope this helps or gives you some ideas. It worked great for me and didn't ruin the cooler.
Attachment 690Chances are you will ruin the cooler but if you use store bought rod holders you will need a drill, nuts, bolts, washers, silicone. Mark the spots for the holes, drill all the way through the cooler, over fill the holes with silicone, place the rod holder, put a bolt through, and a washer and nut on the inside. Use stainless nuts, bolts, and washers so it will not rust and by using silicone the cooler shouldn't leak.
what was said above, also took the handles off the sides to allow the mounting of the holders......I liked mine on the sides so they didn't hit me as I pulled the cooler along..... aloud for a area for me....have since went with a regular pier cart
I am what some call vertically challenged so the rods hitting me in the head was not a problem.
Thanks Bhunter68. Since I seem to be visually challanged in seeing this, I'll let my husband read and see if he understands.
Thanks everyone for the ideas. I really like ironman's pics and his way of putting them on the ends. I do believe I have the exact same cooler too!

Here is a picture with my cooler in the background
I drilled holes through my icebox and used rubber backed washer to seal it off. No problems yet.
Looks great BHUNTER!
Had hoped not to drill through the chest and make it unusable for anything else. Course, after having fish (hopefully) in it all week, not sure it will be fit for any other use.
Just drill the holes and make it your official fishing cooler. If you opt for putting the rod holders on the front you can put a piece of wood between the holder and cooler at the top and it will give you a little more head clearance. I am 5'8 and had no problem with head clearance.
Both of our poles are 2 piece, so clearance shouldn't be a problem if we break them down? I've just gone on a buying spree and now hubs is worried about how on earth we will get all this down to the water. I'm trying to better our chances of coming home with lots of frozen filets. If I don't stop reading here, and throwing more stuff in my cart at the online sporting good store, I won't have anything left to pay Pier#r for his services when we get there. I'm thinking he's going to be my ace in the hole :-)
Pier #er is a class act. I'm sure you will enjoy fishing and learning from him. Enjoy your time and good fishing
I have a cube cooler and I put my rod holders on the front. I am 6 foot 1 and my rods don't hit me when I roll the cooler

Two thumbs up and a snap for #'r!!!
Ammended
Two thumbs up, a snap and a "ball swivel" for #'r!!!!
Can't wait to meet pier#r and learn from him. Sept. seems a long way off.
Will be there Sept. 7 to 14 myself.
I don't drill all the way thru. I use Sheetrock anchor and no problem yet.
Going to just miss you Newts. We arrive the 14th.
I really like BHunter's idea of using the ratchet strap to fasten the whole apparatus to the cooler without drilling holes. That's thinking outside the box---no pun intended.
Thanks haywire. Just tried to figure out how to have a general use cooler and fishing cooler combined.
I bought a collapsible cart (both the handle and the base are telescopic), and I have loved having the extra space. The main difference that it makes is providing enough room to hold a bait bucket in front of the cooler.
So far, I've always gone to the pier with a friend, so that one of us carries rods and the other handles the cart, one of these days we'll have to make some rod holders too. Good ideas mentioned here for that!
What kind of cart crosshairy? A regular fishing cart, or like a 2 wheeler type cart? Inquiring minds want to know. I'm already getting chewed for the amount of stuff I intend to bring on this trip, so I'm hesitant to even bring up the idea of a cart.
