I'd say you'll be money ahead if you learn what it is, how it acts, and how to fish with it before bringing it go the pier.
A 704 should hold 250yds of 30lb and still have enough room for 200yds of 16lb mono.Set it up like that and You'll never put strait mono on a king reel again because you only have stretch in the top shot.

I have about 200 yards of braid backing on every one of my king and long rods but have never actually seen it off the spool. I usually grab the for sale braid what ever brand since I just look at it as I would have run out of line anyhow. It's just hopefull insurance.
Now for the down side when braid on black and green Penn spools or Mitchell spools,corrosion.Always apply a thick layer of bow string wax to the bottom half of the spool before putting the line on and take the braid off after fishing season and clean the spool.
