There will soon be a debate within this thread :0
what do u mean?
saw them in the keys.....very cool....the kings have nothing on them for skying on bait....seen them sky 15 ft in the air.....like they do it all the time and look for the landing wish i had my camera that day they were chasing the bally hoo
I've never heard of one being caught up this far north and they are not listed in the AL Record Fish list.
Me neither Carl, though a few area anglers have claimed to have caught one.
Odd though, no one ever seems to able to produce a picture as evidence. ::)
Most likely a case of mistaken ID from a small king (with spots) or a large spanish mac.
Another oddity is that the global distribution map for this species on FishBase shows the whole Gulf of Mexico as their range... :-\
It sure would be cool to see one in person! VERY distinctive brown bars on the sides 8)
A truely beautiful mackerel (their name means "painted mackerel")...

Bill, I saw a fair number of 'high skying' mackerel in Costa Rica (Pacific side).
"Sierra" they called them, and they too looked like a cross between our king and spanish macs.
Either those or cero would be a hoot from a pier as are our two species!
Thats really cool! we might get to see one Mabee with the way the fish have been holding to the pier this year. especially the migratory cobia still being seen middle of june!
Right after the oil spill I caught two or three of what I though were juvenile cero mackerel. They have the distinct horizontal bars running down both sides of them. They were mixed in with the spanish we were catching at that time.
