coastal lock swivels

All right i grew up in Idaho fishing for trout in lakes and rivers My dad always had this thing about changing colors of your spoons or flat fish which seemed to work After fishing on the pier for awhile many say do a direct tie on with your swivel and leader And i have followed this advice but i saw the coastal locks and was wondering if any one has used them or had luck i was just looking for a quicker way to change colors of my yo zuris and various other crank baits so i can try more lures sometimes i don't change do the fact i don't want to tie on a new one

Occasionally I have used small coastlock snap swivels for quick changing lures. (think 'minimal')
That seems the way to go when there are a LOT of spanish in the water biting off swivels a foot or two above the lure.

Might not have to change colors if you don't use a snap.. IMHO color isn't near as important as how you make the bait look.. Practice knots.. Definitely worth it, shouldn't take more than 30 secs to cut and retie.

When it comes to terminal tackle less is definitely better

I had to learn the hard way.....but I did learn

THe only snap swivels i use is to attach the hook to my bubble rigs. That way when the spanish shred the straw, I can replace it easily. The straw hides the snap swivel.

You mention changing out Yozuri or other crankbaits. Every individual jig, spoon, crankbait or even a bait hook deserves its own leader, so if you are going to change bait you should be changing your leader too. Sure you can have a snap swivel attached to your mainline to attach new leaders to, but that brings up a few issues. First it adds more terminal tackle to the rig which can limit the number of bites you will get. If you are lucky enough to get bit even the smallest bare swivel can look like a morsel of bait that has gotten away from the hooked fish and a trailing fish will try to eat it and cut your mainline. I would tend to believe that a snap swivel would look a lot more like a meal than a bare swivel. If you use snaps, knots get neglected. Isn't that the whole idea behind snaps? Tie on a snap so you don't have to worry about retying knots. This is poor logic since a knot is the weakest link in a balanced setup and has the shortest span of duty. Knots are easy enough to learn to be proficient at tying not to take the time to learn how to do it and the more you tie them the faster you get.

If you just absolutely have to use a snap, a coastlock is the only type worth using.

You're right on DRH !!!! That's exactly what happens when you use a swivel : The knot get neglected.

Why a specific leader for a bait ?? You can just as easily cut the leader and redo a haywire if the leader is long enough and still usable(not kinked)

i just have most of my lures tied to the leader and in my tackle box and if i want or need to change i just tie on a already rigged lure on to the mainline it doesn't take long and no worries of a snap swivel breaking or coming undone. my advice no snap swivel

Three reasons off the top of my head:

[li]I think that using as short of a leader as possible is best and cutting just to change a bait more than once or twice leads to bordering on ridiculously short.[/li]
[li]By changing out leader and lure as a unit it requires a new leader to mainline knot.[/li]
[li]It is more efficient to have leaders made in advance and simply tie a knot as opposed to making a haywire. However, an overhand or figure eight in seven strand might be most efficient. [/li][/list]

10-4 I find it hard to store several large plugs with single strand wire or flouro leaders.. And if you fish a whole lot, those great little swivels add up,

I have got to admit storage issues are a drawback. Seriously, are you worried about a swivel that cost a quarter when you are attaching it to a plug that costs at least $5.00? You need to go swivel shopping with Norm.

I don't throw away plugs or swivels... But I see people throw away 12" of wire and swivel when that little spro is still perfect....

Ever had a Mack literally destroy a plug ? Most of the time that leader is fine

[font=comic sans ms][size=12pt]I keep a few lures already rigged with neatly coiled leaders in short pieces of pvc standing upright, nested in a plastic coffee can.
It works pretty good considering all the money I don’t have invested in the apparatus.

It’s better to have things pre-rigged, but don’t leave home without your leader materials and tools.

I use a pool noodle piece wrapped in duct tape on my pier cart handle for quick grabs

Ok thanks all i will keep up with the way you all showed me at the pier I have my lures pre-rigged with seven strand and swivel so basically i need to take some fishing line to the deer stand the rest of the year and practice my knot tying while awaiting a swamp donkey to show up

The majority of my lures that get tossed at the pier, have a 1.5-2', 30# sevenstrand leader, and swivel ready to go.

#r's advice has me using tiny coastal locks on smaller lures/spoons used for Specks, Bass and etc, quick change for when trying to find what their hitting on.

Eagle Claw makes a very tiny locking snap swivel that is rated for #50. About the same size as a Spro #50 swivel. Adam aka VikingGuy turned me on to them. Having the swivel on there allows the lure to move about more freely as opposed to having the line tied directly too, and also allows for a quick change. I have killed quite a few fish using them. He slayed the biggest trout at Perdido Pass using those one the lures he used.

I tend toward the improved clinch.

I've been using the San Diego Jam knot for tying my shock leaders onto swivels.
On my larger surf rigs I've long 40-50# mono shock leaders for tossing larger baits.

On smaller stuff I usually tie a Trilene knot or Improved Clinch.

I prefer to use a Palomar knot. Its very quick and easy to tie and works with braid and mono.

If you have a smart phone, download the KnotWars app. It is very helpful and has videos of how to tie the different knots. It also compares the knot strength with mono, flouro, and braid

[size=12pt]Fishin' Fool[/size]. Knot Wars winner over the palomar for strength. Easy to tie and works extremely well with braid. Does not tie well with heavier mono (25#+) as the loop tend to fall behind the eye and is difficult to get pulled back around. San Diego Jam is an excellent knot for heavier monos.

I am with you on the Fish-N-Fool knot Greg. I have tested this knot myself with a scale, not merely "Oh that felt stronger than another knot", it is hands down the strongest knot I'm aware of. It is ~50% stronger than a Uni knot which is essentially the same knot with just a single pass through the eye and a darn good knot in its own right.

To be honest I use several, but normally just a uni, I can tie uni in no time at all, and if I'm tying something on , most of the time, I'm normaly in a rush

I use different knots for different size lines too

One thing about the Fishin' Fool is that before sliding the knot tight, be sure to wet it and pull the long line slowly to snug it up tight. Dry or too fast and you'll heat the line and weaken the knot. Also makes an ugly kink just above the knot.

Looks to be a good knot but just to many steps to assure that there is no failures.

And where would the cutoff of too many steps be? You could probably say that about 100% of knots depending on what you decide is "too many steps."

Having to be sure to wet the line and pull it slowly or it will kink is a bit worrisome. All te knot looks to be is a uni with the line through the swivel eye twice.

I always thought this step was conventional wisdom and have always done it without question on all my knots. You're comment has definitely got me to thinking that it may be an unnecessary step. I will do some testing and get back with the results.

It is just a uni with an extra pass and it does make cinching the knot down more difficult. However it is worth the extra effort if you're not in a rush to tie up. It is not the type of knot you or at least not I can tie in haste and expect good results. IMO a hasty uni is better than a hasty F-N-F, if nothing else it is faster to tie.

I learned this knot from John G. but his version only uses two loops versus three. Works great and is extremely fast and easy to tie, not to mention it works with everything from 10-200 lb test.

The grouper knot is close to a uni but stronger.Three loops on line under 50lb and two on line 60 to 250.I use this knot most all the time because it's the only one that works with heavy mono and me working in an offshore tackle store it's a must.Another thing,it's the only knot I can tie fast and perfect in the dark once I'm able to find the eye of a #14 swivel.As for braid,palomar is the way to go.

Can't lay my hands on it right now but I read a study and watched the accompanying video where the tester proved, at least to my mind, that pulling a dry knot down the standing part (of any knot) and the resulting heat does in fact weaken the knot. Alternatively, the wet knot showed significant gains in strength over the dry knot.

That said, knots are like preachers and pediatricians. Everyone has their favorite and any discussion of them is likely to be lively. :poke1:

Uni has always been my favorite, going to have to try that with the second wrap. Bet that will be hard with heavy line, but guess you don't need a 100% knot when using a heavier leader for abrasion resistance, or a shock leader. I always have done like peaches, use that leader til its dead or too short.
