what is the best jig for cobia
not a jig but i have always loved a live eel, small cat, or a nice crab
I've seen plenty of cobia caught on small catfish. If a cobia is hungry you can catch them on almost anything
If you don't have an eel then a 6-8" catfish has always been my goto bait they will eat it like candy.
thanks man I'm going out for my first time this weekend to catch cobia and kink
Good luck on the cobia its the wrong time of year but you can still find a few dwellers around but they are scarce.
Mr. Eel is your friend. Ling candy.....
Jigs: No Alibi, Big Ben, popeye, and Octo head are my favorites
Live Bait: Eel, pinfish, catfish, alewife, and nothing really beats a good lively threadfin.
hard tail too
Where can you get live eels around here? J&M? I wish I'd had a few last Tuesday when those two ling were hanging around the octi.
Blue crab would be better this time of year.
They don't call them "Coco colored crab-crunchers" for nothing.
Baby sea turtle they like them things
Real talk, how many legal cobia have been caught with jigs off the pier this year? If it is more than 2 I'll be impressed.
Ribeyes or Vienna sausages.
Sometimes it is a matter of luck, timing, and the Fishing God smiling down on you. My last legal Cobia was October 2012 and caught on a jig with a Gulp Shrimp. I was standing at the cleaning station and glanced over the side and saw a cruiser gliding by and grabbed my nearby Flounder rod and flipped the Gulp Shrimp on a jig just in front of him. He inhaled it immediately and I considered myself fortunate to have him on the pier about 15 minutes later. Not a monster but legal with a couple inches to spare. He had an even larger friend with him that quickly disappeared when the first one realized he was hooked. What a nice way to take a break from the Flounder I was cleaning. Never pass up an opportunity to put a hook in front of a Cobia regardless of what is on the hook. They are not always picky about what they will take.
That is true I caught an undersized one yesterday on a small gold spoon.
cobia will eat just about anything, I've had the best luck with them in a boat on frozen cigs, and the only one I caught off the pier was a 27" one on a gator spoon
