Cobia Jig Preferences

A 2oz jig is to light for fishing from GSP with it being a fair chase pier. Fishing eels is a good idea but you run into the same problem with the light jigs. You must be able to throw them long distances and be accurate with them. Live eels are a great bait but using them from the pier can be a bit difficult.

My only question about the live bait from the southeast corner fished on the bottom is about the clash between bottom-rigs and snobbling as styles. If one is to bottom-fish I would think the most peaceful route is casting up-current. That's the same problem that happened with trolleys.

Of course, if the live bait is fished straight down and not far off bottom with enough weight to prevent tangling the pilings there is less issue. Plenty of cobes work deep and of course they love structure, so you aren't caught up in the meteor showers of jigs around a visible fish.

It all works out quite well. I did it last year. There is plenty of room for everybody out there. If there is a problem out there that time of year its because someone is looking for it and not wanting to work with those around them.

Keep in mind there are a LOT of sheepshead and often spanish fishers sharing the same rail.
I have seen too many times where over eager cobia bottomfishers drop a line on a big rig, lean it against the rail and then wander off to do something else.
That is a NO-NO!
Any decent cobia angler will tell you to stand close by your rig to detect that quick bite and keep from interfering with other anglers fighting fish.

i like eels too, but i always have a problem with them tying themselves in a knot.
