For the second year in a row we won't be able the trip down. Yesterday my wife fell at work and broke both of her arms. Last year I had to have back surgery. We sure were looking forward to coming down to visit and enjoy the beach and pier. Well maybe next year.
We'll look forward to seeing you next year, then! I know you're disappointed, but maybe those permit will have grown up and the flounder and pompano released from the hatchery will be catchable size then. If that's the case, it'll be a fishing bonanza when you get here. Take care of yourself and your wife in the interim. I'll try to keep posting reports whenever I go to the pier.
Since you mentioned the Hatchery was wondering if anybody has ever taken the tour? Talked to two guys on the pier the other day that work there. They were there to help back flush the line that pumps water to them. Some where by the Airport. They said it was on Wednesdays.
Yes I have taken the tour. Excellent, very interesting, good work they’re doing. Highly recommend.
I hope she recovers quickly and fully.

My wifes breaks are such that she won't have to wear casts. That means we might be able to come down first part of March for a couple weeks. At that time how is the spring break crowd. My wife is concerned that we will be coming into a party circus.
Only if you stay around "The Hangout" or other public beaches.
The pier and park are a bit busier than average, but still a VERY pleasant atmosphere in GS/OBch...
David is correct about the Hangout. It can be crowded and very loud. We always come the 3rd week in March and the area is crowded but usually cool enough to suppress any wild partying-at least on the beach. Gulf Shores even banned smoking on the beach this year and alcohol on the beach the last couple of years to try and tame the Panama City Beach crowd that they were expecting to migrate in. No guarantee that you won't see Haywire(topless-wearing a sombrero) crowd surfing with the coeds in Orange Beach if you get here before turkey season opens. One eighth of the octi will be elbow to elbow with sheep herders. Spanish MAY show up by then and maybe a stray king.Quote:

What's left of Panama City? Media reports of the hurricane were not encouraging but probably sensationalized. And that was the Weather Channel.
Panama City Beach (piers) came through the hurricane relatively unscathed.
Mexico Beach is the 'Disaster Area' however, but in the process of rebuilding...
My Brother in law and Father in law live in that area , FIL In Panama City Beach , BIL to the east of him in Panama City , We took him supplies 3 days after and to check on my FIL since we couldn't get them on the phone .Quote:

We went back for New Year's and a lot of the downed trees were gone so you could get around better , Power and water were restored with in anywhere from 3 days to 4 weeks , Power crews were setting new poles and running new lines the old stuff was just being pushed aside , the Piers were open but not much fishing action due to Redtide but I understand that's not a problem now .
It was as bad as the Weather Channel said , It's going to be years before it's back 100% , Lots of people have left and likely not coming back , Same thing that happened in New Orleans were enter neighborhoods are still empty . So that's all I've got .
