Thread: Crab Snare

I was watching a youtube about Penn Fishing reels and it led to one about catching crab with snares(west coast) Has anyone ever tried using them for blue crab? Can they be caught from the pier or close by?

I have never seen them around the Chesapeake bay (blue crab heaven) or the gulf coast. Doesn't mean it won't work. I also have one but have not tried it.

The wier between little lagoon and lake Shelby is loaded with crabs. Tie a chicken wing and a 3 ounce led on a line and throw it out. Let it sit for about two minutes and SLOWLY bring it in. Have a net ready. Crabs are used to riding a bait through the current when feeding and will keep hold until you can net them. Be careful in this area though. Gators can become very friendly. If they take your chicken wing, it’s better just to let him have it. An 8 foot gator may not seem like much but they are strong animals.

Fresh water license needed on Lake Shelby side of weir. I've seen Johnny Law there several times.

Go to the state park office just up the road and get a permit. Just use a chicken neck and a string and watch the string move and get the net ready.
