Crappie tubes/jigs
Has anyone ever thrown small crappie jigs on a light action rod with a 1000 or 1500 size reel with #4 mono. Just curious if I should bring mine and mess around throwing it. Maybe catch some bait. Pass the time mid day while the youngun's nap and I have some time by myself.

Maybe inshore or in the surf. It's a long way from the deck of the pier to the water, I'd think you'd be half spooled just from casting on a reel that small. I use a Penn Fierce II 1000 for panfish and crappie.

I use my ultralight with 2 lb flouro to pitch a red 1/64 oz trout/crappie magnet jig in the surf. I am very successful catching pinfish, etc. for redfish bait using this rig. I can't imagine why it wouldn't work on the pier.
It's also great to keep my five year old busy.

Guess I'll pack my crappie stuff then. And I was talking about fishing the surf. Just to pass the time when the beach gets a little crowded.

We have caught specks at night on 1/16 oz. crappie jigs around lighted piers, using 4# mono. Don't catch much in the surf when it's crowded, regardless what we throw.
