Crimps for fluorocarbon leader

I am having trouble with tying good knots; I do pretty good with the braid line, but have trouble with the heavier mono or fluorocarbon leader. I was fishing the pier last Friday with a ¾ oz Kastmaster silver spoon tied to a 40lb fluorocarbon leader and hooked up with very nice Spanish that got away because the of a poorly tied knot. I am thinking that I may be better served by using a crimp to tie the lure on to the leader. My question is what size and type of crimp would work best for me. Thanks

Have you tried a 4 or 5 turn Uni knot? That's what I use for all my big# flouro leaders.

Yes, I even have a tool for tying varies knots, but I'm not very good at it and it takes me a lot of time. I was thinking a simple crimp might work better and take less time.

they make light-weight crimps that will work with 40#, I used to use them on trolling leaders. You can flatten them with a pair of regular pliers, just don't over-crimp.
Might want to stop by J&M, that is where I got mine years ago.
Make sure to get the flat black ones, not the shiny black or silver.

I'm not a fan of crimps.
Too much terminal movement, and MORE likely to fail (or get bit off) IMHO

You'd be better served to study up on your knot tying ;-)

not an expert by any means but i concur.

I use the Uni knot for all my leader knots and the double Uni for braid to mono or fluorocarbon and don't have any problems. I use the silver ones with the special crimper on 100lb mono for my chuggers . Never tried it on mono but used to use it a lot on 7 strand.

I thought the answer would be to sharpen up on my knot abilities, but had to ask. Thanks guys I always appreciate the advice.

I have same problem with knots, still learning. For reference I use, Netknots.com, explains knot and has animated video on tying knot.

For 40 lbs and up I go to a figure 8. Main thing is to cinch it down tight* and put a permanent bend in the line. With 40 or 50, if I think it's questionable, I put a "keeper" half hitch in the tag end. If I'm making rigs at home (or have time on the pier) I put a tiny drop of superglue at the base of the tag end (NEVER fails).

Super glue is your friend.

*Hang the hook on a nail, take the tag end in pliers and the running end in your hand and pull like your life depends on it - this puts a permanent "set" in the line. (also advisable with a uni knot in heavy line)

One more edit: when I started using the uni-knot I learned that the most important thing to do is cinch it tight (as above, nail, pliers, pull). Pulling on the running end of a uni does not do the job, you must pull the tag end tight or it may unwind on that big king (voice of experience).

I suggest you try my personal favorite : Davy Knot

I caught snake kings using this knot tied to a kastmaster spoon.

Super Glue ..... great idea! Even I can do that. Thanks
