I haven't used one, but it seems kinda heavy for a long day of fishing and has a slow retrieve ratio. Probably would be OK for a set surf rig.
Thanks Fin, that's how I was thinking of using it as well. Maybe with a Daiwa Beefstick rod. Can't really beat the price!
I don't think you will be disappointed with the Beef Stick Rod and as you said can't beat the price !!
The shaft bearing on that reel is open (unshielded) so keep sand away from it at all costs and I'd avoid dunking it. I tear down and relube all my reels prior to putting them into service and would clean/repack the bearings with good reel grease and grease the main gear. If you tear into these lower end Daiwas be careful with stripping the heads out of the screws, they're very soft.
These get get good reviews from the catfish crowd and land based shark fishermen who want line capacity but don't want to break the bank.
+1
Both are 'value priced' @ BPS and we sell a good number of them.
I've not heard any bad reviews from them at the store FWIW.
Good advice from Dutch!
I have one I will sell you one for $10. It has only been fished a couple of times and washed after each use. It really isn't a bad reel for the price. Paid $30 at Academy a couple of years ago for it and was impressed with it considering the price. It only has one metal and one plastic drag washer and as the others said it isn't sealed. But like I said, I will sale you mine for $10. Just upgraded my surf reel so it is sitting in my closet now.
I'd take you up on that chef, but you'd have to ship it all the way to Wisconsin...I'll give it some thought. 10 bucks sounds like a good deal!
I will see if it will fit in a flat rate box and see how much it would be total. Would still be cheaper than a brand new one. If you are planning on a trip down in spring or sometime I will still have it and could just meet you then. Just let me know, it is sitting in the closet. Still works like new so don't want to toss a perfectly good reel. If I posted it in the usual places it probably would never sell because of little interest.
Sounds good, let me know. If I do decide to buy it how do you want me to pay you?
The flat rate shipping us about $5 I believe. An even $15 should do it, don't mind paying the extra tax our what have you. I have to work the next few days but I will go by the post office on Friday and check. I think I already have a flat rate box it will fit in but not 100% on that. PM me your email address and we will sort out the detail once I get all the information on shipping.
Ok. No problem. I will probably post it in the classified section to see if anyone wants it.
Chef, not that it matters anymore since I already have the reel, but what one did you upgrade to?
I already had a Penn Sargus 8000 that was my king reel. It was big and heavy for kings but got the job done(pretty much a wench). I am getting a 704 in place of it so I have made it my surf reel.
Thanks chef.
Not a problem.
