Decent Hotels/Motels near the pier?

Hi guys, and gals.

Been awhile since I posted. Wife gave me the OK to maybe take a trip down to Gulf Shores/Orange Beach/Fort Morgan...without the family. One of the kids is taking a band trip to New York City the same week so the spring break fund is somewhat limited...Any decent hotels/motels around the area of the Pier where I won't get killed or horribly disfigured? LOL! Maybe one of you guys want to take me in for a week.....didn't think so. LOL! Can't make the case for renting a house/condo for a week just for me. Any suggestions would be great!

What week are you coming down?

March 27th - maybe April 3 or 4th.

Might be kinda tough to find a place with all the Spring Breakers.

Usually Alabama's spring break is over by then. I came down by myself the 2nd week of April last year and got a room in Foley on Hotwire less than $60 per night that had a mini frig. It was plenty to keep my fillets frozen for a few days. The Magnusson Inn in Gulf Shores may be an option. It gets mixed reviews but its probably a lot nicer than some of the deer camps I have stayed in that were barely a notch above a condemned Detroit crack house. Fresh Market (live shrimp and bull minnows) and the "twice the ice" vending machine right behind it is on the way to the pier. Its about a 10 minute drive to the pier early in the morning and there are plenty of inexpensive places to eat nearby. I hope to come down some time around the first to middle of April again. The water was stained but the BIG pompano were biting along with a few specks and several sheepshead. I'm going to try Priceline next time as well.

You might want to look at VRBO.com It's mostly condo owners who rent their places out. You can get some really nice places for bargain rates!

it isn't the Alabama's spring break to worry about, all the spring break's are staggered through out the country and last about a month and 1/2....Easter being the last week for it....when we would usually come....book early to find and get a room and you will be all right....if you wait to long.... you will be out of luck....wish I could help with names of places....there was one Hotel just down from where we were staying but can't remember the name....I think Brent Roberts manages it and right on the beach in Gulf Shores

here it is and appears to be 156 a night....wow....there is a nice place over in Pensacola I stayed at for 80 a night, with small kitchen large refrige and computer table big bath room ....just down from the military base that seemed to get a lot of visit from them ....I would call it a efficiency ,and a decent drive to the pier

Several years ago I stayed three nights in a house on a hunting club's property that had burned all except one big room with wooden pallets made into bunk beds. They had rigged a propane line to a gas water heater and one small space heater. The roof leaked and you could hear mice running in the rafters! There is a condominium in Gulf Shores that is just East of the Hangout that has a mexican restaurant in the front. I can't think of the name of the complex but they are pretty cheap. I imagine the noise level from the live music at the Hangout and the restaurant might disrupt my much needed beauty rest.

Was there a couple of weeks ago for business and a little fishing and paid $50 a night at the Microtel previously mentioned. Next to the Gulf Shores airport. Not great but I didn't have the wife on this trip so it was a decent place to sleep and shower. Based on the size of my room, there's a reason the place is named Microtel. Did not come with a fridge but, unfortunately, one was not needed for the undersized specs I caught.

I know, that's what I'm afraid of Geauxyo.....she just started talking about remodeling now! Uuuugghhhhh

We have had the best luck with VRBO's. Some facility managers are willing to negotiate; and there are a lot, a whole lot, of choices. That's good for the marketplace.

I always use VRBO if I'm bringing the family. You can usually save 20% or more off the Real Estate company's rates. And like bodebum you are dealing with the owner who is sometimes willing to negotiate especially if it is last minute or off season. I use Priceline or Hotwire to get the best deal on a room just for me for a loner fishing trip.

BDL, I usually stay in pcola. There are plenty of hotels in the $50 range. Go up into the $60 and you can stay in some really nice places. The hotel's arounD GS have priced themselves into the condo range for the most part. Staying in pcola gives some options for fishing....30 minutes to Navarre or Gulf Shores with pcola pier an option, too. The wife is usually with me, which makes me consider a short trip on days when she has plans. All of the quality inns are nice. The one by the military base is handy to get to GS and is often in the 50's.

Hey Geauxyo! If you are really looking for cheap stay, I have 3 beds in my rv that are not used.

use VRBO.com if you are staying for very long and want to be able to cook food. My Dad and I stayed last spring at the Microtel up the highway before you get to the bridge on the way to the beach. The only negative we had about the place was we had a hard time getting ice (there was a softball tournament or something and they only had 1 working ice machine in our part of the hotel).

VRBO will be better if you want something a little larger and especially if you want to cook meals, since most hotels won't have a stove/oven in the room.

Agree with everyone saying use VRBO. I always use them when booking down there. If a view isn't important, a 1 br/1 ba will probably cost you less than a hotel and have a kitchen to cook all the fish you catch.
