Dixey Bar Starts on the westernmost part of the beach before it curves into the bay and extends for several miles to the SSW on the east side of the channel (parallel to the buoys). Usually when people fish there from the shore they do fish the deeper water at the tip, actually fishing the deeper water, not the bar, although sometimes the reds are more up on the bar. In my experience sharks are in the deeper water during the day and we have caught some nice kings in the hole on the west side from a boat.
If you had a east or northeast wind you could probably catch kings with a balloon float.
If I remember correctly, one year the winner of the Destin Kingfish Tourney ran all the way to the mouth of Mobile Bay for the winning fish. Biggest we have caught is 25 lbs, but I have had some USOs that took a lot of line real fast.
Is that King Mackeral. Can u catch them from shore?
No, you want to be near the SW tip, at the mouth of the bay or to the east ON THE GULF SIDE (sometimes) where the water gets shallower, at least that's closer to where we catch them in the boat.Quote:
Thanks for the reply. The spot near where the ferry departs/arrives, is that a good apot for Reds?
As far as kings, yes I mean king mackerel, I've never seen anyone catch them from the shore, but we have caught them close enough that a person from the shore could reach them with a balloon float and a wind from the east (current will drag you over the bar unless the wind is strong). You will need to stay clear of the boats. The ones we have caught have been from 8-20 feet deep.
Thanks, I fished close to a structure, old concrete blocks in the water. It was adjacent to the walkway from the fort just near the museam. Presumably I need to be further South? Once more thanks for the advice
Looking at Google Earth (or whatever view you can get, microsoft has one too) the Bar starts around 30.22464 North and 88.02690 West. To the east of there you are getting up on the bar and to the west and north you have a fairly good dropoff. The Bar itself extends several miles to the SSW (about 200 degrees). Sand Island Light is on the West side of the ship channel, the bar is on the east side of the channel and parallel to it. The channel is visible on Google Earth.
Thank you so much for your help👍
Thanks for the map. Your help is greatly aporeciated:p
If you're looking for big Bull Reds or Big Uglies at Ft. Morgan anywhere on the point is great, particularly in the Fall/Winter.
I prefer to fish in the Yellow, but anywhere in the Red is good.
On the Western most side the drop off into deep water is only 10-20 yards, be sure to fish the shallow water and right on the edge of the drop.
I like large dropper rigs with peeled shrimp or crab and Carolinas with cut Mullet.
Dixey Bar is pretty much due South of the Point and extending about a quarter mile East.
From the beach you'll usually observe boats drifting across it as they fish, they drift, go back up current and repeat.

From the Ferry Southward can be hot for Specks and Flounder along the beach.
When we were there in October, the kids were playing with skates on the beach. I took a couple; cut off the "wings" and sliced up the rest of the fish; used this cut bait for reds in 9-15' of water along the bar and absolutely KILLED 'em.
Biggest problem I had was everything caught was bull . . . no "eater" sizes; so everything was released; but we had days and days of big fun. :congratulatory:
Thanks for the reply. Hope the weather improves tommorrow and I will give it a go.
Tomorrow?
The Point at Ft. Morgan is probably one of the last places I'd be fishing tomorrow.
The bay is like a sewer pipe of freshwater and sediment right now.
And it's not gonna get better anytime soon. Came across the I65 bridge today and all the rivers in the Delta are high and dirty, as in coffee brown dirty.
Dekuk, have you tried the surf at Mobile St? It is a fine beach (weather permitting).
Salinity still real low in the bay.
NOWcast salinity for Mobile Bay...

What is a good range in salinity to make fishing a good option for fort morgan. Or what should the chart look like for good fishing conditions.
No you don't.
You'd be surprised what swims within easy casting distance in that strip of usually turbulent water.
Huge Bull Reds, Big Uglies and tasty puppy drum abound, they're feeding on everything swept through there.
Get some nice whiting there too. And I've seen sharks busting bait in the surf.
And that area has produced huge flounders for us, using bull minnows.
I agree, I've been out there and all of what I thought were the primo spots were taken and had to fish farther down than I liked. I have been amazed at how close you can catch big bulls to the beach in such shallow water. One time we were catching so many in that area close to the beach that I boat actually moved in and started drifting that area because we were catching a bunch of fish and farther out he wasn't having much luck. Needless to say we weren't very happy.
I agree on the flounder catch too, all of my biggest flounder have come from that area.
