What is your favorite lure for the surf in mid to late May?
Silver spoon. I don't go to the beach without them. In all different sizes.
Silver Cotton Cordell, 3/4oz. With a 6" 20lb single strand leader or the blues will take it away from you.....quickly.
If it's summer time I'm making sure I have a bubble rig. The Spanish and lady fish are a blast on light tackle with them.
What time of year are you throwing this. I've tried in the past with a spoon with very little success. Could have been the presentation or just a bad day to fish. Love chunking a spoon for the distance and water you can cover.Quote:

A white jig, perhaps 2 smaller ones in tandem. A favorite pattern pre-tied is a 3/4 oz butterbean with a 1/8 spearhead teaser above.
Make the loop about 5" and use a teaser with the hair trimmed just behind the hook.
Hard to beat the original white Looney Jig, designed by Mr. Looney years ago.
If my feet are wet, that's what I am throwing. Look for draws and troughs where the surf drains back out. That's where the hungry fish hang....
Loonies, pompano jigs & bubble rigs.
Yo-zuri crystal minnow 3-1/2" or 4-3/8"(sinking or floating). Any color but I try to mimic natural bait colors. Other than that jigs-looneys, pomp, spro bucktails(trim the hair to the bend of the hook).
mirrolure is another go to lure.
So both go on the same loop.
With the silver spoon, do you experiment with the speed of the retrieve?
Absolutely. Due to compressed fishing time and other beach activities with kids it's more likely to be bad days on the ole fishing calendar. If I'm catching on something else I'm not changing. Probably evil forces working against me.
