Thread: FEMA Approves Beach Restoration

I read that FEMA approved beach restoration for Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. I wonder if there was any money included for pier restoration?

I understand they are separate proposals that will run concurrently beginning next fall.
The biological assessment for the pier repair has also been approved and passed on the USACoE for permitting.
But the Feds will not allow water work (like dredging or piling work) be done during "turtle nesting season" (May through November).

Figures. I hate turtles.

Good thing turtle nesting season wasn''t in on the build of the Pier it wouldn't have ever opened up.

- that's 7 months out of a year.

So correct me if I’m wrong - and I hope I’m wrong, once work begins they won’t be able to work from May - November???

I would think (hope?) that only applies to work below the waterline. If they get the framework in place I can't see them not working on the superstructure. After all, they did the remodel in the summertime and "finished" on the day Sally hit in September (19th?).

But you are probably right about work below the waterline.

When they restore the beach do they add sand on top of whats already there or are they making the beach wider? Do they pump it in from the gulf then level it with dozers or haul it from somewhere?

Yeah, the pump the sand slurry up onto the beach, let the water drain away, then push it around with bulldozers...
