The first Allen "Rookie" Kruse Memorial Snapper Tournament will held Saturday (June 23) out of various marinas in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores.
Kruse, a longtime charter captain based in Orange Beach, took his life during the turmoil surrounding the BP oil spill in 2010.
All charter boats and boats moored in Orange Beach are eligible to compete. Entry in the private-boat and charter-boat division cost $100 and $5 in the angler division, which is for charter passengers only. Captains and crew are not eligible.
Payouts of 40 percent for first and 25 percent for second will be made in each division.
The remaining proceeds are to be used toward deployment of new reefs inside three miles. Plans are to name the reef zone Rookie's Ridge.
Weigh-ins will be held throughout the day at Zeke's Marina, SanRoc Cay Marina, Outcast Marina and Orange Beach Marina in Orange Beach, and the Gulf Shores Marina on the Fort Morgan peninsula.
The awards celebration will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Zeke's Marina.
