First time posting and fishing from GSP...........
I have a few questions to ask and from the looks of this forum this is where I need to be asking them. I am new to pier fishing and would like any advice you guys could offer to make my first time out there tomorrow night enjoyable. What rigs should I use for what fish and what bait seems to work. I also wanted to know about fishing cart etiquette. I built my own out of an old lawn cart today and I am very excited to use it. Are there any unsaid rules about the carts size? Mine is 2 feet by 4 feet. Also what are the unspoken pier fishermans rules on gaffing? I dont currently have a gaff. Will someone down there help me out if I catch one worth gaffing? I hate to sound like such a noob but I want to have a good time and not piss anyone off. I figured asking you guys who fish there a lot would help my odds of having a good time and wanting to go back. Any advice on etiquette and rigs would be very much appreciated. Also I am going to be using a Penn 105 on a 7 foot ugly stick and a Penn 850 ss on a Penn slammer rod for the bigger fish. Are these good setups to use on the pier. Sorry if I went too long.... hahaha. Thanks guys. You look like a good group of people. ;D

Re: First time posting and fishing from GSP...........
If you're going out there at night don't expect much 'etiquette'.
From the looks of things in the mornings most of the night crew just doesn't care. :
We all start out from a position of ignorance (lack of information).
We can learn by observing, or by asking questions (even basic ones), or BOTH ;-)
There've been some pretty big pier carts out there, so yours doesn't sound any different really.
At least during the day there are usually folks around with a gaff.
If nobody volunteers with one while you are fighting the fish all you have to do is call out "I have a big fish here, could someone gaff it for me?" once you get it close to being ready.
Your rigs sound like they could work adequately. You didn't mention the amount and #test line...
Hope this helps!(RETIRED) mostly.

Re: First time posting and fishing from GSP...........
First off thanks for responding! I was thinking about putting some 30# cajun red on the 850 and 14# on the smaller rig. I'm going to re-spool both rigs prior to leaving tomorrow. I'm also going to make some leaders using the instructions I found on here in other posts. What normally bites at night or is it a crap shoot? Any line recommendations would be appreciated as well. Thanks!!

Don't use Cajun red mono it sucks and 30# way to big you wont cast far with it.. its to big i use 15#ande for king fishing works with reds, jacks, sharks also i use 10lb or smaller on you smaller rig

If you get there before j&m closes they can spool your reels with great line for you. It would let you try better line without wasting lots of money on stuff you don't like. you could go with some of the momoi diamond line.. no regrets. Otherwise the trilene big game and ande premium are cheap and good. I agree with 10# and 15# or 16# in momoi.
Etiquette : dont use braid or make a mess and leave it. Try to learn the routine for casting when the wind is blowing before you cast.. learn what a wind loop is. Follow your fish and get out of the way when someone else is. Things are different at night. Take a wingman.

Thanks, I called J&M and they said they would spool the 850 with 400 yards of momoi for 8 to 10 bucks. Thanks fellas!

Re: First time posting and fishing from GSP...........
I have another question. What bait should I bring to catch kings and possibly reds. Also when king fishing are there weights involved or what? I remember fishing with my dad and we would just flip cigar minnows with no weights out the back of the boat and catch kings while we were drop fishing on the rigs. How should I go about it on the pier?

Use the same style to cast and drift dead cigar minnows.
Only 'twitch' it every now and then (the method we call "snobbling" to entice a strike ;-)
Only need to add a little weight (like a single splitshot or two) in extreme circumstances of wind and/or current.(RETIRED) mostly.
