Thread: Crappie Fishing

The crappie fishing on Lake Guntersville has been pretty sketchy the last 10 days or so, but the bycatch has begun to improve.
These drum are moving into the creeks, and have been testing our crappie poles, checking out our knots and drag. Harvested 2 small ones for us, the others get C&R.

To they fillet out like redfish? How do you cook them?

Yeah, fillet and skin, cut out rib bones and slice fillets, batter and deep fry. Used to scale and eviscerate and grill whole, then I got married, and Carolyn can't bring herself to eat fish with bone-in.

I've never crappie fished on Lake Guntersville but, next to Lake Talquin in Quincy, FL, it's the best large mouth bass fishery I've ever been on.

Yeah, they are, but fighting them in gets old after the first couple of times, on 4# mono. My personal record for 4# mono is a 24 lb. drum, took 45 min. Bass aren't near as hard to land as the big drum are.

You ought to try that in the surf then ;-)
Nothing for the fish to break off by wrapping so whiting are "fun", pompano a "test, but it' comes to a test of wills with a bull red or 'big ugly'.

My personal best was a 26.5# drum on 6# braid (from the pier).

Ok just thought I'd ask. I've got family that're from Boaz and Fort Payne. Beautful area up there.
