Fishing in the rain

I've seen a lot of question on here about bait, tackle, etc., etc. My question is "what is the bite like in the rain?" Not thunder and lightening. So I'd planned on coming down this week until two things happened. First my wife mentioned what she'd like to do for Valentines Day (did not calculate that into my plans) and the Weather Chanel's report for Wednesday was not favorable. So, that put a kink in this weeks plan.
So, my new plan is to come next week even though the forecast is less than favorable for the first part of the week.

I NEVER, repeat, NEVER watch the weather channel for forecasts!

Wednesday shows a 40% chance of showers before noon (it may even move out long before then).

I love fishing in the rain if the lighting is not around !

My best days and biggest catches have been in the rain both fresh and salt water I love it Not a downpour but a cloudy day with a light rain is one of my favorites Fish don't have eyelids so they can't block out glare That's why you see more activity early in the morning or late in the evening and always find the largemouth bass on the shady side of the stump A cloudy day with a light rain just gives you prime conditions longer as well as better temperatures for both you and the fish

Amen to that. The "% rain chance" is useless. Whether a fast front comes by with 8 minutes of rain or a sub-tropical system sits on us dumping from daylight to dark, that is still 100% rain chance. You need to look at weather maps to have any real understanding of what is likely to happen. It is difficult to explain this to people wanting to cancel their dolphin tour booking 9 days from now because it is calling for a 50% rain chance that day :bang

Heavy rainfall that sends muddy water into the Gulf and around the pier is more of a factor to me than anything. Dirty water will shut down mackerel and pompano in a hurry. I have done ok on flounder, reds, ground mullet and unfortunately catfish in dirty water. I catch about 20 catfish for every desirable fish down there in muddy water. I'm pretty sure mackerel and flounder aren't around in numbers right now anyway. Good luck if you go!

Ok, that seals it. What time does pier fishing 101 class start next Tuesday?

The fish are in the water----- the rain doesn't bother them at all!!!

Rainy or heavy overcast days are great for surf fishing or crappie fishing on the river; we love it.

A mere few minutes after you arrive with fresh donuts. You will have no shortage of "instructors".

Is there a donut preference? Lol. I can't stand those donut pitiful attempts at Wally World.

I wouldn't leave my hand in a box of Walmart donuts too long on the end of the pier unless you like the name "Stubby". You might lose it! Just follow the rules and ask for some help. Hope you catch a few.

I prefer the more pricey Bear Claw than donuts or Apple fritters.

Lol. Anybody need eggs or bacon???

If your able to catch it right I usually bring biscuits and sausage gravy at least once
each spring.

I like wally-world apple fritters, and their donuts aren't bad, just not quite up to Dunkin or KK standards.

Best donuts I have ever had were from a mom & pop place on Galveston Island, damnnnnn, I'm talking smak your momma good.

My favorites have got to be Shipley's. Hard to find, but good!!

Check out my avatar pic. 34 pound king hit in the middle of a driving, though brief, rainstorm that had the rail empty. Took a live sardine right off the SE corner of the octi. I can close me eyes and still see that feed. One of many caught in the rain, only now I carry a rainsuit. :)

Agreed. Whether it be fishing or at work (construction) I've found that it's just not a rain day, but days impacted by rain.

I especially love hard rains that raise the water level in a lake or pond making the bank come alive with eager , hungry fish in search of new domain. You can really capitalize in these types of situations!
