Thread: Fishing x-mas to new years

Hello all, I am visiting from Christmas to new years, Ill be staying very close to the pier and was wondering what if anything is biting this time of year. My son and I love surf fishing but we have never been to Gulf Shores. Thank you for any information. Gary

Sheepshead, whiting, croaker and pompano will most likely be the best bets. Maybe bonito. In really warm years Spanish might show up but unlikely.

I'll be down there that same week. Hopefully we'll find something biting, maybe whiting , sheepshead or drum. One thing for certain is we are going to try. Can't catch fish sitting on the balcony.

Pompano would be nice.

I'm coming down tomorrow, the 2nd, for a week and I'm excited. Heck, I'm not a very good fisherman anyway. If I catch anything I'll be happy.

Man that sounds great! I dont care what I catch just love to fish! What would the rig be? We have surf rods, but what line test, and bait is best?

No need for a 10-11-12 foot surf rod for the peir. Go much lighter. Much more entertaining. 8# test for spades, whiting, and croaker. Have a rod with heavy test ready incase there are reds around. Live/fresh dead bait works best.

I put 6 lb test on my light rod. If something breaks that I'll feel lucky.
