This forum is seemingly immune to the draw to FB, and I believe without hesitation that it has everything to do with the average age of the average forum member here. I've been a member here for several years now, and without a doubt the manner by which the posts are written, presented, and include photo evidence are without a doubt some of the most well-thought out posts on any fishing forum on the 'net. Younger generations simply don't take the time to do such things, as (my son would be included here) most would rather look at a photo of a nice fish and neglect to read the details. It takes time to create an accurate report which includes valuable information other anglers may be able to use to help them the next time they go to the pier.
In a world where Instagram, SnapChat, Vine, etc. present merely a quick photo/video op and not much else, the young are being conditioned to Cliff Notes just about everything in their daily lives. Take a teenager and ask them to sit at a table of adults and hold an actual conversation. They cannot do it, and in many cases they don't know how to do it either. Sad? Perhaps. Reality? Absolutely and before I go on sounding like a guy who walked uphill both ways to school in the snow, I will also add that it's ok for kids to be that way because it is 100% how their generations communicate with one another.
I'll use this post as an example: I would gather that the majority of the members here will read this in its entirety. Ask my son, his twin sister, or any other young person to read it and they'll stop after about three sentences. It's the way of the world today, and thankfully this (and a few select others) forum exists in a manner by which original fishing forums from the 2000's prospered for so long.
I rather enjoy reading posts from Chili, Eye-m-Serious, Haywire, Pier#er, Ironman, and so many others. It's fun to see visitors welcomed with open arms, even though I'm quite sure that "what can I expect to catch in July from the pier" has been answered no less than 12,000,000 times on this very forum. See, that takes patience, understanding, and a willingness to help that in my opinion is lost on younger folks. In a world of "look at me" it is refreshing to see some put others before themselves right here in this place.
With that, I have rambled enough. Thank you for the add, information, and such great reports (even if nothing is caught). Y'all make this northerner feel welcome and long for a time when I can spend hour after hour on the pier and in the surf at Gulf Shores.
That was a great post BFG. Summed up my feelings perfectly about this site and the younger generation today. Being the father of 4 kids I have some experience there, lol.
one of the main reasons i like posting on this forum compared to FB is you dont have people cluttering up the results with random B.S, plus stuff is easy for me to find,although i dont post much on the daily pier reports i post a lot on the coastal tab and its easy for me to find my old post so i can study what the moon phases, bait i used and results from past trips with relative ease. Kinda a fishing journal I can post online and keep track of and if the info helps anyone out theyre more than welcome.
