Where should I purchase shrimp? Should I go to a grocery store or tackle shop?
Fresh dead from a tackle shop has worked better for me. Maybe the difference is gulf shrimp vs. Vietnam Shrimp, previously frozen and preserved.
Try Blalock's or any place in Bon Secour, and ask if it's been previously frozen.
That said previously frozen Gulf shrimp sold for human consumption is MUCH better quality than the frozen bait shrimp garbage.
Some bait shops also have fresh dead that came right off the bait boats.
We buy our bait shrimp, fresh, from the seafood market on Hwy. 180 ( Ft. Morgan Rd. ). If they are out of bait shrimp, we just punt and buy fresh shrimp. We are going to fish, and we can eat left-over bait that way, lol. We do this all the time. Keep your shrimp on ice, and out of the water, in your cooler. Fresh dead shrimp is brown, or gray, not pinkish. Or even green. Pinkish shrimp is catfish bait. And you can't eat'em!
If you don't want to get live shrimp the next best is fresh dead from the bait shop
Thanks for the advice! If I understand correctly, you are saying not to buy fresh shrimp from a grocery store. Last year I bought fresh shrimp at Publix, but do not know if it was previously frozen or not.
