[/quote]Back in the mid 70's a friend tried to get me interested in lure collecting. I went with him on a couple of "hunts" and, while enjoyable, I just couldn't develope any genuine interest. Foolish, foolish, he later sold his entire collection, of about 40-50 lures for enough money to pay off a pretty good sized mortage in the '80s. I read in BassMaster Magazine of one bass lure bumping the 1,000,000 dollar range. Some guy in Texas has one of two known lures and he out bid everyone at an auction for it. He was offered over a million for it and he refused it. I wish I could remember the lures name and the magazines edition. Read the article while waiting my turn for the Barbers chair.
:) I'm gonna back up and lick my calf on that price for that lure, It may have been 100,000. I've been trying to find the Bassmaster Magazine story, but haven't located it . If and when I do, I'll furnish the link. That hobby kinda flies under the radar, but is very lucrative.
What I don't understand is some of the "collectable" lures that bring decent money sucked as far as catching fish goes.

[/quote]I don't think that aspect enters into it. I've seen old lures I wouldn't even pick up, let alone use, and they bring a pretty penny. My friend that I mention didn't deal with collectors when he was amassing his collection. He learned what was used to make the old lures,material, hardware, the type of eyes, paint schemes etc. etc. and hit the back roads and checked out the small town hardware stores. Never a chain type store always the mom&pop type stores. You would be surprised at what these folks held on to.
Only about $100 each average. :puke:
Collectables are those that were rare, and they were rare because they did NOT sell big numbers.
Collectables can also be rare because of condition, like things which are new in package, but a rapala minnow NIP would still not be rare.
