Why are the grey polyurethane tires better than just plain old black rubber cart tires that are extra wide?
I know polyurethane tires wear better than rubber tires. They also have a higher load capacity as well as less resistance when rolling. Not sure how much these qualities effect a pier cart (which I'm assuming you're talking about). I would guess with less resistance, beach applications may be easier.
This year when come down was wanting to try some surf fishing. And was just looking at carts to see what the plus and minuses are. See a lot of beech carts the grey one not many pier carts with them. And vice versa not many beech cart with black rubber.
The gray, fat tires are way out ahead of the regular tires in the sand. I have both and know what I'm talking about. You can, however, stack too much stuff on the low pressure tires and have trouble pulling the cart, but all things being equal, the fat tires win by several lengths. They are a bit pricey, though.
Wheeleez is the company that makes these...

and they are proud of them ;-)
I love the Wheeleez tires for sand, but tend to rock n roll a bit with a load on a hard surface
Yep I was thinking about a golf cart tire or maybe small atv tire. Something not so price a junk lawn mower rear drive tire nice a wide 12" round. Black rubber tire.
On the sand I will never pull another cart with rubber wheels again after going with the Wheeleez gray balloon tires a couple years ago. I see that they are again selling their orange poly tires which are cheaper than the grey ones and the kit can be purchased locally at Sam's and I'm sure John can get them for you at J&M (I just haven't seen them on display). I've seen everything on beach carts from Power Wheels plastic tires, riding lawnmower tires, wheelbarrow tires and they all work-some just require A LOT more effort than others. It is the wide footprint, low pressure (3-5psi) poly tires that slightly deform under load that allows them to glide over the soft sand. Most tires do fine on packed sand or in the surf zone, but when pulling a cooler full of ice and the rest of your gear and you're forced into soft/unpacked sand; you'll be wishing you had taken your baby aspirin that morning.
I heard a suggestion that you go by Harbor Freight and buy four tires/wheels, thus making a dually out of your cart. Don't know how it'd work, but it would definitely double your load surface.
I could see a golf cart tire working....I see them at the flea markets here and there....I have them (or similar) on my 4 wheeler trailer for hauling wood out of the woods....never and most likely won't try it on sand....being it is a short walk from the condo.....but if I ever move I will need something if I surf fish
Dually! The guy said it does good on the sand, but I only saw it on the pier.

Lowrider's cart with gocart racing slicks! He said he hadn't tried it on sand yet.

The tire/axel package for the large cart runs around $125. Just remember,a wider tire requires a longer axel.
A trip up the beach at Ft. Morgan and back with a loaded cart , ( rods ,reels ,tackle bag ,full cooler ,sandspikes ,bait,( beach chair , umbrella, towels ,and kitchen sink for the wife) with the standard tires easily convinced me that the cost of balloon tires wasn't to high of a price to pay . J&M had the orange ones . The price was cheaper than Wheeleez and no shipping . I look forward to my surf fishing trips now instead of suffering through the trek there and back . When the wife is not going and have only fishing gear and cooler I glide over the sand .
I would have to try something like these....:D
I Can tell you with Confidence that all Black rubber tiles will fail miserably compared to Wheeleez tires. I have done extensive testing.
Here's a video of an electric Cart I just finished.

I was in J&m the other day and he does carry them. Dutch probably didn't see them because they were in the boxes on top shelf above the other numerous other cart parts John stocks.
Pier#r had pictures of a plastic sled of fishing gear just gliding over sand.
The dually cart is mine. It worked better than single tires on sand, BUT it still sucked really bad to pull across a stretch of beach. I bit the bullet for a cart with a set of wheeleez and in my opinion they are a bargain. MUCH easier to pull and worth every penny if you surf fish much.
I modified a large ice fishing sled with the deep sides (11 inches) because I thought the sleds like Pier#er has would be to top heavy and I wanted more room,I mounted rod holders in the back, eye hooks for strapping things in etc. Now I have a lot of room for my cooler, chairs, sand spikes, tackle box, bait buckets etc. but I need a mule or at least some young strong guy to pull it. LOL It does fine in the soft sand going down from the Condo to the beach and not bad in the hard pack for short distances but going back up hill to the condo takes more effort and there is no way I would want to pull it from the fort to the point. I would stick to the kind Pier#er has or get the sand tires.
A CHEAP alternative to sinking $300 into a beach cart.
here it is in action...

I have a sled just like Pier#r's and I also have a cart that I built from PVC pipe that has Wheeleez tires on it. The sled is fine as long as you keep it light. The cart is much better for heavier loads and longer distance. I'm looking at building an Aluminum cart out of a harbor fright Cargo Carrier, which is what the motorized cart below is made from. In my opinion, the lighter you can keep the cart it self the better. Another important issue is what the wheels run on, bushings or bearings. In my opinion, sealed bearings make a world of difference when pulling.
Well I got to get me a sled now.sure would make my walks out to katrina cut easier.and not to jack the thread but pier#r have you been to the west beach lately?
I ask bc I was just there last week and the entire beach on the gulf side starting at the parking lot and about 100 yards or so towards the cut has washed away almost all the way to the grass is this normal for that area?
