Spanish at the pass
My nephew caught this today at the pass.. Pretty good Spanish. We didn't have scales and wanted an estimate of it. We would obviously guesstimate really high.

That is the best part of not having a scale.
Once on a charter, I had a fellow hook a feisty small black tip on light tackle. After a prolonged battle, I netted the fish, unhooked it, did the customary photo, and returned the 16ish lb fish into the drink. "What it run captain? About 60 pounds?" I hesitated for a moment, trying to gauge if he was joking -- but no, the seriousness of the question lingered in the air. My response would make or break the trip.
"Yeah, right around there."
By the end of the day, they were discussing dates for next year's trip.
But to answer your question, I'd say about 3, unless you want it to be 6.

What kind of lure did he use ?

I have to try the pass now.Women cry at the end of TITANIC.
Men cry at the end of GLADIATOR.

Looks in the three-ish range, not more than that. Still a nice fish and enjoy the story. I caught my personal best mahi last year in a kayak and thought for sure it was a 5+lb fish. I was sorely disappointed when it hit the scales. I don't weigh my fish anymore

Beautiful fish! You'd think he'd be happier unless he read some of these 'puny' estimates.
It was a 'near state record' ;-)
A good way to tell is to measure the fork length (and girth if possible).
For instance a 24" FL spanish mackerel is about 4 pounds...

Thx David for the info! I would tell you it was the couple of times you fished with us to teach us the ropes that helped us catch it.. But then I'd probably have to admit to all the ones we missed, all the tangled rods and the multiple times he got hung on the same mystery thing and snapped his line😜..
I really appreciate the reply. AJ said today "I bet Mr David would know how big it was even without scales.. And how to catch more".
