Gulf Shores closes beaches, Orange Beach to close them in the morning
https://admin-chicago2.bloxcms.com/g...=1380842625409October 3, 2013, Orange Beach, AL (OBA) – Melvin Shepard, beach safety director for Orange Beach, says his crews will fly double red flags starting Friday morning, Oct. 4, as the surf gets rougher because of the approach of Tropical Storm Karen.
The City of Gulf Shores has posted double red flags on all beaches within the corporate limits of Gulf Shores due to expected deteriorating conditions related to the storm.
This includes all beaches from Gulf State Park west to Laguna Key. The presence of double red flags indicates that extremely hazardous conditions are present or are expected and all waters are closed to the public.

Due to the Federal government shutdown, usgs.gov and most associated web sites are unavailable.
Only web sites necessary to protect lives and property will be maintained
This is on the State Park fb page:
"Weather update: As of 10:00am on Friday October 4, 2013 all facilities at Gulf State Park-Alabama are still open. The Gulf waters are closed for swimming, but all facilities remain open."

Hurricane Watch discontinued, hazardous surf conditions remain
Gulf Shores, Ala - October 4, 2013 -As of the 4 p.m. advisory, the National Weather Service has discontinued the Hurricane Watch for the entire northern Gulf Coast. A Tropical Storm Watch has now been issued indicating Tropical Storm conditions are possible within the next 48 hours.
Life-threatening rip currents still exist along the Alabama Gulf Coast and double red flags continue to fly along Gulf Shores beaches. The presence of double red flags indicates that extremely hazardous conditions are present and all waters are closed to the public until further notice.
The National Weather Service forecast calls for 4 - 6 inches of rainfall with 2 - 3 feet of coastal flooding possible.
Residents who live in flood prone, low-lying areas and those residing in mobile homes, campgrounds and RV parks should take all necessary precautions, in advance of the storm.Gulf Shores officials continue to actively monitor storm developments and will provide updates as they are available.
