Headed to Gulf Shores for a long week-end need tips
Hi , I am a new member to the forum and have been coming down to Gulf Shores for over eight years and I cannot seem to catch a decent size Red or many Reds for that matter? Any tips or tricks would be appreciated . Is Perdito Pass a good place to start ? Thanks . Atlangler36 .
Re: Headed to Gulf Shores for a long week-end need tips
Hi Matt and WELCOME!
February is a tuff month for redfish (any kind of fish really).
But that being said there can be bull reds caught from the end of the GSPPier even in mid winter.
Nice black drum too.
Best bet is FRESH cut bait (like mullet) or BIG shrimp (the eating kind) or most any live baitfish in the 1/3 to 2/3 pound size.
There is usually a contingent of knowledgable fisherman on the pier that will be glad to render assisstance in rigging and bait presentation and advise you on a variety of subjects whilst waiting for a bite themselves ;-)
Hope this helps!

HUH?
i love insore fishing in February
and best bet IMHO would be to head to perdido pass at night w/ cut mullet or live pinfish, croaker(for the bulls), or fish the wall and rocks with live shrimp. redfish, i almost always catch a few slots when im fishing for sheepies from the kayak.
Good Luck
Re: Headed to Gulf Shores for a long week-end need tips
Thank you everyone who responeded, great advice ! Fishing anytime i am not working; is good enough for me!!! Just give me a beer and a fishi'in line ! :fishing: Is night time the best this time of year? or follow the tides ? Are there times the tides are to strong in the pass for fishing? Thanks Again ! Matt
Re: Headed to Gulf Shores for a long week-end need tips
ok so at night fish the beach side of perdito pass for reds? Or the wall ?
Re: Headed to Gulf Shores for a long week-end need tips
just hire pier#er for your guide and the fish will beg you to catch them.
Re: Headed to Gulf Shores for a long week-end need tips
lol , if i had all the money I spent down there on gear and tackle . I could hire him ten times over ! I am determined this time to produce something worthy! :eat:
Re: Headed to Gulf Shores for a long week-end need tips
I second what Duck said. I fished with Pier#r last month, I learned so much from him.
The next couple of trips down I'm going to hire him again, #'r is a real class act.
Re: Headed to Gulf Shores for a long week-end need tips
#r is definitely a phenomenal fisherman but also just a great person!

LOL I luv inshore fishing in Feb too!
My comment was from a "land lubber's perspective" ;-) :D
Yeah, there seem to often be some slot reds (and black drum) around the jetties @ Perdido Pass.
The seawall used to be MUCH better (for BULL reds) with the lights and parking lot access IMHO.
Surely they can still be caught from the remainder of the wall, just not as likely.
Matt, there are times when the current can run REALLY strong thru Perdido Pass and even a 6 ounce pyramid won't hold bottom unless it gets 'hung up' on a rock or something.
Hint: under the bridge on the east side can be good at times like that ;-)
Re: Headed to Gulf Shores for a long week-end need tips
Pier#'r thanks for responding, thanks to everyone who offered advice !! I went to your site , you are quite the fisherman/resident expert !!! I have six teenagers coming down with me this trip, so I am not sure how much time i will have to actually fish. I will definetly be back in the late spring and would love to pay you for your expertise as a guide. I saw you had a $100.00 minimum, is this like three hours for one person ? Thanks, Matt
Please feel free to e-mail me directly at atlgamecock36@yahoo.com, if you have any additional info. on your services. Who knows maybe we can work something out this trip, its all up in the air when your dealing with teens though! :-\
