Looking for reds, first time here. Planning on croakers and live shrimp. Hearing that freelining is good. 2/0 hooks ok?
Any tips for better success?

6/0 hooks I believe it's neap tide. I'm not a big fan of neap tide. But that cold sure will help. Good luck, please give us a report. Live panfish will help as well.
If I was fishing the fort for Reds, which I've been known to do from time to time, with some success.
I'd fish a Owner 7/0 circle, with a big fillet or cut piece of fresh Mullet, second to the mullet would be the biggest live or fresh shrimp I could find.
A long heavy leader of 50# mono will help avoid cut offs from the ubiquitous Atlantic Sharpnose shark.
Whatever weight it takes to hold in the current, if there is one on a neap.
This will get hit by almost anything, Reds, Blacks, Jacks, Sharks, rays and whatnot.
By far, the majority of my Bull Reds at the Fort have been caught on my surf casting rigs I make for sharking.
16/0 circle, 135# wire leader, 6oz weight and baited with half a mullet.
But when those are the rigs in the water, something is bound to hit'em. :)
I've not had much luck with small Pinfish or Croakers, and only moderate success with Blue crabs.
We've caught nice specs on croakers and pinfish there. For live bait we have caught them mostly with finger mullet. Cut mullet, squid and dead lys or pogies do well for cut bait.
