Just bought a Lowrance Elite-5 CHIRP Fish Finder/Chart Plotter. Looked at some of the equivalent Humminbird models (which I'm most familiar with), even Garmin and Raymarine. Will be used exclusively in freshwater lakes. Any comments for or against are appreciated...even though it's to late to return it! LOL!
Its a good unit the new chirp technology is amazing. I'm getting ready to upgrade mine and I'm torn between the lowrance elite 5 and the raymarine dragonfly.
Having used handheld GPS units for about 20 years and an exclusive Garmin user for over 15 of those years, I can relate to being apprehensive about a new unit from a different manufacturer. I am totally clueless with a Magellan unit in my hands now, despite having owned one in the past.
Don't fret over whether your Lowrance is a good unit or not. They have been in the depth finder business for as long as I knew such a thing existed and in the GPS business long enough to have worked out issues they may have experienced in the past.
Take some time to read the owners manual, play any instructional DVD or interweb videos and familiarize yourself with your unit. Also don't lament over any aspect you liked better about any previous Humminbirds you've used. Instead focus on what you like better about your new unit. This will help a lot with your buyer's remorse.
Good luck with your new purchase and give us (me particularly, since I'll be getting something similar soon) a review once you've used it.
Monk, I was seriously considering a Dragonfly myself, the down imaging looked amazing and good reviews. My only concern was that they have been more or less an exclusive salt water based company and how their units would do in fresh water.
