    Laguna Key Community

Looking like we could be renting a house in Laguna Key this summer. I see they have a decent dock that stretches out into the lagoon. Does anyone have any info on fishing this area? I can't tell for sure from pictures but it doesn't appear the dock has any lights.

    Thanks for any info..

The dock doesn't have lights pointed downward, and minimal lighting period. We fished it once or twice with minimal luck.

I'd recommend the surf that time year. It's hot, but you will see a ton of activity in the water early mornings around 530 to 800. We typically wade out to about thigh deep and cast out with spoons as far as possible. Wait a second or two and rip it back fairly quickly. Once you get the spoon about halfway back in, slow down a bit. If Spanish are there you will know pretty quickly. If they aren't, I've noticed blues trout and ladyfish will hit it once you slow down.

If that fails, put some pink shrimp bites on a bottom rig and toss it out. You will likely catch whiting. Sometimes really shallow, sometimes deep.

We've caught bull reds on cutbait that time of year, but more likely earlier on in the summer or into fall.

Sometimes you will see big schools of jacks/blues/mackerel busting on the top of the water. Always keep a heavy spoon handy.to cast into them. Jack crevalle are one of the most fun fish out there (and actually taste good despite what you will read.)
