Hurricane approaching- Fishing good this weekend?

So we have a system approaching the Gulf - Will it be worth :fishing: this weekend? What do you guys think? I have only been down on the coast a little over a year so I have NO experiece with fishing and storms ???

[size=14pt]That is a good question. Now I am no pro for certain, but I been fishing that pier for a few years now. Theory is critters know when bad weather is coming and usually feed heavily. There are a lot of variables at work when a hurricane is approaching. If it gets into the gulf, the swell activity will increase. This can trigger a bite. Like my brother tells me...they ain't biting at home. Bad day fishing....etc.

It can't get much worse than it is, I'd say it could only help. As long as it doesn't come too close!

Don't know about the GSP, but I'll give ya a report from DI, be out there Saturday if the weather is OK.

I just hope we don't get seas rough enough to muddy up the water. I hope I'll be through spraying herbicide up in Clarke County by Saturday and can find out first hand what the approaching weather will do to the fishing. While I'm up here in the backwoods hill country, I ought to look around and see if there is a session of Googan School I can attend to see if I missed anything the first time---Let's see, I need 80# test braid on a 950 Super Spin with automatic bail on a 12' rod so I can throw a 6 oz. spoon a quarter of a mile across the wind---what am I missing?

Maybe the kings will bite at Navarre or PCBch if the storm doesn't get into the open gulf.
But that saying about them biting before a storm that's in the gulf generally doesn't pertain to the GSPPier (aka mudhole) :spank:

You have to make sure you have 3 lines in the water at once (2 on the opposite side of the pier from you that are not bungied down). All of your tackle must be equipped to catch 20,000 leagues under the sea, and you have to walk around making sure everyone knows that you "know what you are doing," and you absolutely (under no circumstance) show any consideration for the guy who has a stud fish on who is asking you to step back so you can go under his line. Along with what you have already listed, I think this just about sums it up. ;)

I think you should save the 6 oz. spoon for the second or third session. You definitely want to add snap swivels, nylon coated leader wire, beads, an assortment of pyramid sinkers from 3 to 8 oz and some Killer B bait (preferably something that has been through at least three thaw and refreeze cycles). Oh and pick up some more snap swivels.

Make sure you pile your nasty stinking bait in the rail so all of us can enjoy putting our elbows in it.And the handicap areas,reserve those spaces for the true professional that thaws out 10lbs of bait at a time, likes to cut up what he catches for bait and thinks 6 hour old sun cured squid is the best bait for them big hard head catfish.The number thing you must do in order to complete googan school, DON'T CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF OR USE THE GARBAGE CANS. Oh yea,I forgot what the topic was about before Haywire derailed it :poke1: ,all storm systems in the GOM suck.

you might be able to talk Dick into putting a couch on his new cart and then this problem of couch fishing will be solved.

You folks are way too kind. I was expecting somebody to tell me that I didn't miss a thing a Googan School the first time.

From the sound of that forecast, I'll see ya'll after the wind dies down and the mud settles. Maybe I'll get some crickets and try to catch a mess of bream.

This is what I have learned about storms in the Gulf. Even if they are around Mexico, they kick up a swell in Gulf Shores that muddies the water like Mobile Bay. If they pass to the East of us, it isnt quite as bad.

Prior to the storm, fishing is usually good. In fairhope, it makes conditions ripe for jubilees with all other conditions being right.

If a storm messes up the water, head East. It seems like the smallest of tropical systems messes up our water for days, but not so in Navarre.

With this cool weather and the storm approaching, I would think this weekend would be pretty good. It felt like Oct outside this morning.

I on the other hand will be in Tampa moving my stuff back up here this weekend, finally. If I can get a good wind from the storm to push the Uhaul, I can get home quicker and with less gas.

6am Thurs morning shows more and more likely impact to the northern gulf. Batten down the hatches guys and gals. Seriously I was on the coast staying at the Four Seasons Condo with the pier when Hurricane Ike came in a couple of Novembers ago and dropped to tropical storm status just before coming ashore. I stayed up all night watching the waves roll in and the lights never went out on the Four Seasons Pier. The crests were just under the deck which is 22 feet above the water. It is two feet taller than the state pier and had no damage. The state pier had quite a few panels kicked out and a good bit of electrical and water system damage. As I recall it was closed for about a month. The Four Seasons Pier had no damage and we were fishing in 36 hours as soon as the surf settled down. We had tremendous schools of sheephead congregate on the pier for two days after the storm and everyone caught plenty. There must have been tens of thousands and they were moving in a stream like formation. We also caught flounder, reds, and whiting real well for the rest of the week. If that pattern repeats then the state pier should be good starting about 36 to 48 hours after the storm. I am looking forward to coming down again in early October. I wish all of you good luck.

It looks like the center of the storm will not reach us until tuesday or wednesday, so i suppose I will try fishing this weekend...assuming the water is not a mud hole.

DADGUMMIT! Every time I look at the projected path of this storm, it gets worse for us here on Pleasure Island.
I really don't have time for a hurricane right now.

Give it a few days and it will be moved all the way to Mexico. You know they dont have a clue where it will be this far out.

I hate to rain on your[s] parade[/s] pier, but those of us in drought country could use a little rain up here from the remnants of a storm.
