I know you hate me...
and I may even be considered a Googan as I'm not a local and live in Michigan. However I've been fishing the pier since I was 12 years old dating back to the mid 80's and have a pretty good idea as to what I'm doing as far as pier etiquette goes. Now here is why you hate me and my reasoning for doing so. ;D
I use braided line, yes I said braid. :run Here is why, most of my tackle is set up to fish outta boats and popping for pelagics, Cabrera Snapper, Pez Gallo(Rooster Fish) , as well as jigging, and to unspool and respool for the pier is not cheap.
Now I know the advantages of the braid and the disadvantages as far as tangles on the pier and that it will cut others off in an instant with a zippy King hooked up. (which I have been able to avoid so far, but I know it's a potential risk) What, if any other factors are a detrement to using braid on the pier.
I will listen to the criticism and see if you can convince me and my wallet that it warrants the change to mono for a couple weeks a year. 8)
Good luck and God bless see ya'll in about a month.
Have a Good Day, Pez
P.S.

Re: I know you hate me...
I have equipment for both....offshore and pier that make the trip with me every time....and ready to go.....some with braid some with out.....but the braid doesn't go to the pier ....used to but I got tired of wind knots.....maybe because I spooled it myself and too loose??? not sure but it works for bottom bumping just fine and deep jigging too .....why would you say they hate you? as long as you pay attention to your line and bait....... it can be fished successfully from the pier

Re: I know you hate me...
I have spare spools and they are loaded with braid also. I suppose I could look at buying a few more, but again not cheap. Still waiting on convincing. ;D
Fin, if I end up fishing the braid again this year I will wear the pass if that's all it takes and you can post it for all to see.
Ironman, it was meant as more sarcasm than anything, just having fun with it. I have taken a lot of crap about it, most in fun and joking around and some not so much. I just don't understand the hatred of it, especially as you say you are paying attention to what you're doing. 8)

Re: I know you hate me...
Ive got one rig with braid and a top shot of mono but dont use it much. The problem is even the best fishermen will let a fish get out of control . Especially at the strike if you talking to buddy and not paying attention. I dont use it much because it might mess someone else up first and worries about wind knots and tangle second. Ive been cut across the arm by braid when someone down the rail let one get away from them and i was talking not paying attention.

Re: I know you hate me...
When the octi gets crowded, I don't care how good or careful you are, tangles are going to happen. It's an unavoidable part of pier fishing. Getting your line instantly cut on someone's braid is 100% avoidable.

Re: I know you hate me...
Yo' pez thought I should change your P.S. up a little. As for braid,I love the stuff except for king fishing on the pier. As for changing line,go to a tackle shop and have them dump it onto a plastic spool then when you want to put the braid back on,do it.

Re: I know you hate me...
IMHO, best idea I've heard. So simple, it evaded me. Thanks, John.

Re: I know you hate me...
I don't hate you :), I am from Michigan too :fishing:.
I use a lot of braided line too. but I don't fish from the pier very often.

Re: I know you hate me...
Abrasion resistance is a huge advantage in favor mono. If a large fish runs under the pier, braid will fail almost instantly if it barely touches a piling. With mono it may fail also, but many times there is a chance of still landing your fish.
Mono stretches were braid doesn't. I won't go in to all the details of why, but will say that I personally feel that stretch is an advantage when fighting fish.
Mono is also generally larger in diameter than braid. Larger diameter line creates more drag in the water. Drag which is pressure that the fish has to deal with and you never feel. Think of it as free pressure you're putting on the fish.
Fishing braid in a crowded situation is just down right rude. We won't hate you, but we may not have anything but bad things to say about you and depending on who it is talking about you, it may be behind your back or in your face. Making friends is far better than making enemies, so why not go with the flow and use mono?

Re: I know you hate me...
Use braid for throwing plugs If you don't want to loose them. Braid Is good If you know how to use it. If anyone gives you crap and you are honestly trying to look out for others and being respectful, just remember it is a public pier so go to the pier house and let them take care of it. :fishing:

Re: I know you hate me...
I don't hate you.... I still use Ande. Thats what they told me to put on when I was 7. I call it ole school but I guess its because I don't know what else to use. So I guess the next time I am in J&M, I might get John to school me in the new stuff. Heck I might be sporting some braid this season. LOL

Re: I know you hate me...
You know the pros and cons??? Why do people need to convince you to use or not to use it? If you've been on the pier since the 80's, you should have some kind of idea how to pier fish right? And that long pier fishing and you don't have a setup specifically rigged for the pier?

Re: I know you hate me...
thats right lisa. we did what the old salts told us to do. I will probly never stop using ande unless they quit making it. i myself just dnt understand spending 20 bux on one spool of line when most of the people out there change out their line every year anyway. i would much rather spend 9 bux on two 706's worth of ande.
-
Re: I know you hate me...
Kill remoras easier w/briad  I only use it as backing for my 550 ssg.

Re: I know you hate me...
John and Dublthret, hahahaha. If you are the John that I was referring to I'm surprised that you are on here and a mod at that...good for you as I didn't think there was a chance in hell that you were literate. ;)
Purple, I have had no problem using braid to catch fish from the pier and have done well for my limited pier fishing experience. I love hanging out there and learning from what I I'm sure many of you that I've found here as well as many others that I've talked with over the years.
Last year was the first time that I heard a lot of grumblings about braid, I am assuming, because it was the first year that I've hit the King run hot and heavy.
I like John's idea and after hearing from many of you I will have a King rig set up with mono. If for nothing else to show my Southern friends that not all Yankees are A holes and googans can learn if helped.
I will however have an "I use braid" sign made up for Fin after I get him set up for the 21st century. ;D
I know stuff gets lost in the written word, but a lot of what I post is in jest and mean no disrespect. I am very appreciative of all I've learned from many of the pier rats over the years. They and the pier have inspired my love and respect of the Ocean and the fish that swim them. I'd give anything but my family to live near the Ocean and unfortunately that's what it'd cost me. Someday God willing I will be able to wake up and breathe in that beautiful salt air that many of you do everyday.
Have a good day, Pez

well..... since it's all in jest....the only thing I can think of..... why I might dislike you....from one yankee to another....... 1 state south of you :poke1:....well you get my drift :poke: ..... all in fun though as I don't hate anyone.....even our trader.... God will sort us out in the end....and wish I was making the trip to complain about your braid (it doesn't bother me except for not being able to see it any good).......maybe later if the in-laws get better health in the coming days....
but good luck to you and I hope you hit it right and a BIG chew is going on....looking forward to the future reports with pictures

still debatable on the literacy but he seems to have a fairly decent sense of buisiness management and hes almost gotten good at rod building.
