I'm looking into buying a kayak here soon mainly for use on calm days on the mobile causeway and back in some creeks in freshwater I'm about 5'9 200 pounds wanted some opinions on a couple good kayaks to look into so far I've heard the old town predator is super nice (about $1200 nice) and the perception pescador pro 10 ($730) i don't want to spend $1,000 on a kayak but I also understand you get what you pay for any and all opinions will be appreciated!
The pescador Pro is a great entry level kayak. You would be just fine in that. Those old town predators are good, but are really heavy.
Been fishing from a kayak since '06, and my first kayak was a Wilderness Systems Tarpon 120. I've heard that the Pesc is a direct copy of the Tarpon hull and is quite a popular kayak. And after a search, I see that it comes with the new style "lawn chair" seat, heck yeah. That was the reason I got rid of the Tarpon, to get a better seat and a more open floor. I bought a Native Slayer and got those features, but got a heavy, harder paddling boat. I hear the Pesacadors are frequently bought with discounts at places like Dick's and West Marine using coupons.
The pescador pro is sounding better and better. 10ft or longer how does the length affect the boat when fishing I feel like a 10ft would be more controllable but that's why I'm on here. Lol
aI've heard that longer yaks track better, however I think it's a non issue for fisherman like us. Looks like the weight capacity is 375 which I think is good, you'll learn to be selective with what you carry when kayak fishing, so that's good as well. I know some guys that have 10 footers for certain smaller bodies of water and for loaners for newbies, work just fine. I've also read many good reviews on Tarpon 100's, which that essentially is. I'd certainly fish in one. Good luck and I'm certainly willing to answer any questions you have on outfitting as well.
The longer the kayak typically the better it will track. You will spend a lot more energy paddling keeping yourself going straight in a 10 ft kayak. If it were me, I would at least get a 12 ft. More space and better tracking but still short enough to be fairly maneuverable. My kayak is 14ft 4in long. I don't have a rudder installed and it tracks very straight. Turns aren't too bad but definitely need a lot more space to turn it.
