Alright, I have a 5000 size Penn Fierce with 230 yds of 15 lb. mono. Its on a Profile 8ft Rod, which I love, and is very well balanced. This will be my king mack set up but I'm starting to get concerned about the line capacity, is that enough?? I really don't want to get a 6000 size just for 70 more yds but at the same time I don't want to hook into a king and be spooled, so what do y'all think?? Thanks!!
Never used a penn fierce how are they?
One thing you might consider is spooling it with a combo of braid and mono. Braid on bottom with top shot of your 15# mono of about 100 yds. Should allow you to get over 300 yds which should be plenty for most situations. J&M can put your mono on a spool, put your braid backing on, and then put the mono top shot back on. Easy peazy. :cool:
@derekb; the Fierce are wonderful for the price. They are really nice corrosion resistant (with the average maintenance and rinsing), also drag is smooth and the reel is an all metal body (really feels solid). One thing I like about the Penn reels such as the Fierce, Sargus, and Battle is the lack of an anti-reverse, this makes them so much easier to break down and clean on off season and also prevents them from breaking on you haha, I can't stand anti-reverse lolol. Overall they're really great reels for the $$$$.
@divedeep: I like that idea and might just do that if I don't when this eBay auction for a 7000 series reel. Thanks!! What lb. braid would you suggest though?
I like 15# braid with a 17# mono top shot but its really just personal preference.

Yes, the conflict just came out. Hands down the best looking Penn reel for under $150. It's just a lighter Battle. I was so close to purchasing this reel but I opted for the Fierce 3000 as my new smaller species/skinny water reel. I wish the fierce was sold with the HT-100 drag washers...Quote:

A 5000 just doesn't strike me as a 15# test mono reel. I would fish it with 12# mono on top of braid. Straight 12# mono should get you within 25-30 yards of the magical 300 yard capacity, with braid way over it. I am not familiar with your rod, so I don't know if it is too heavy for 12 or not.
David, only reason I use 16 is because 12 is too light for my rod - otherwise I'd be using it. Assumed his would prolly have same issue.
If that is the case Greg, I would opt for a 6000 to run 15#. It's less than 2 ounces heavier and a much better match for that size line. Sure you can get by with the 5000 on a heavier rod, but if it was me in this situation I would be looking for a lighter rod and heavier reel in order to have two well balanced outfits.
Hey thanks everyone, the rod is rated I think 12-17 lb, its a king rod, it could do 12lb but i really dont feel comfy with 12 lb lolooool. I like the idea of the braid backing much better with the top shot mono. Thank you to everyone's advice.
