As I learn/practice the haywire twist, does it make sense to test them? Try to make them fail? No one around here is going to tell me if they are OK, and I don't know how perfect they have to be. I could put a serious pull on them if you think it is worth it.
If they look anything like the label they will be stronger than your line.
I think there are two main criteria.
1. both sides (tag and running) of the wire should be bent, not one bent around the other.
2. the wire should not be kinked tight until the last barrel rolls (tag around running)
The rest is aesthetics. I think the smoother it is the less visible it is, but I'm not a fish.
They only have to stand up to 15 pound test! Honestly didn't think of it that way.

Keven E must have a Penn Z....the old Penns teach patience. 15lbs of drag is more than enough for anything you want to get over the rail.
Cant remember ever having a twist break at the hook or swivel.
Its probably the strongest link in the terminal tackle after the swivel.

Actually, those are far more haywire twists than you need unless you are in a big money billfish tournament. Three, maybe four haywire twists before you do the barrel wraps are plenty---and they don't have to be that tight, except for the barrel wraps.Quote:
