Live bait.
when im finally able to make it to the GS in september (so far away!!!! :boohoo:) im going to go the lazy route and throw live bait under a cork off the end of the pier. Any suggestion as far as rig or bait fish used?? and can i buy them or do i need to get good with a castnet??

Re: Live bait.
A sabiki rig is all you usually need.
Can't beat a live 'herring' (spanish sardine) under a float.
It WILL get eated! :shark

Re: Live bait.
That's how Wilson likes to fish :moon:.

Re: Live bait.
i'll be honest with you, it's not as fun, but i've caught more kings that way then snobling, and artificials put together
-
Re: Live bait.
Peaches,
float.
bobber.
buoyant object to tell me when a fish bites.
any of those work better for ya? ;)
-
Re: Live bait.
I take it he's against fishing with a float?

Not me, far more on dead baits, or artificials,
Il fish em live sometimes, but Never under a cork

Re: Live bait.
If your eyesight is not to good to see a line, a float helps you keep up with a live bait., AND if your old and/or your joints hurt and arms get stiff, a float reduces the number of painful cast you have to make. most actions have a reason.
-
Re: Live bait.
The main reason i use corks is to keep my bait in the top four feet of the water column where kings tend to feed. Plus you get to visually see the fish feed about 90% of the time and i personally love seeing the vapor trail a cork leaves in the water when a king takes off.
-
Re: Live bait.
I use a cork 90% of the time, easier to keep track of baits when its crowded.
Get some sabiki rigs and get a ribbon rig from J&M. Use a medium weight rod & drop them down around the pier to catch LY's and sardines.
You'll need a 7-8' medium heavy spinning rig with a bumch of 12-17# test mono, a short wire leader and a #2 or @4 treble. Set your drag light and hang on.

Re: Live bait.
I kill all mine snobbling or with the plug

Re: Live bait.
-
Re: Live bait.
Snobbling is the presentation of a dead bait by making it appear alive (in the act of dying actually) with the use of a quick retrieve and perhaps rod jerk technique.
When properly imparted, this action triggers a reaction strike by king mackerel and other marauding palegic fish that percieve the bait as an easy meal.

What is snobbling?
[/quote]
A pain in the arse for people trying to fish live bait.
-
Re: Live bait.
Snobbling is called CATCHING FISH! :poke1:
-
Re: Live bait.
My Grandpa Numba 1 Cork fisherman. :fishing: :headbang: I cant say nothing bad about it cause I will be danged if he aint the first one to catch a king almorst every morning that we are there :eat:. Still I prefer to snobble

Re: Live bait.
This whole cork fishing thing is gonna turn into the trolley disagreement all over again.
-
Re: Live bait.
Ive never seen anyone that actually had a problem with it when me and my pawpaw were the. Only disagreement I have ever witnessed was when Wilson and that guy got into it haha
-
Re: Live bait.
People that strictly snobble are the reason we cant use trolleys anymore. It takes away 20 ft of railing that they can utilize to throw across three or more fisherman every cast
-
Re: Live bait.
I don't seem to have that problem, I can easily stand in one spot and snobble a cig between two live baits, or two trollies easily, and not cast over either
-
Re: Live bait.
You also know i wasnt referring to you either. The problem isnt the people that CAN fish, its the one's that THINK they can fish.
If it wasn't AGAINST Pete's RULES. I would fish a trolley just to watch you do your thang.

Re: Live bait.
I think Pete has left the building so get yo trolly on. lol.
-
Re: Live bait.
He said nothing about Pete being present. The rules that were put in place two years ago still stand. My wife caught her first king mackerel last year using a trolley setup north of the octogan. The very next day we were informed that there were complaints about them and we were no longer allowed to fish them period. Never once that day were the rods left unattended because there were 7 people in our group and only three trollers were being fished.

Re: Live bait.
I'm neither one who can fish or thinks he can fish -- I've thrown over everybody on this forum multiple times. When the wind blows my casting starts looking like my golf game -- pull the trigger and see where it lands. "Oops. Sorry." It's the way it is when you can't do it enough to get good at it. The thread just reminded me to thank everybody for being so patient.

Re: Live bait.
Trolleys are a great way to catch fish when the current or wind is strong, or the bite is low; If you know what you are doing; and everyone is attentive and respectful of others; they aren't a problem. If someone dosen't Know to follow their bait, or cast into the wind while snobbling; teach them. Gotta learn somehow :fishing:
