We (4 boys and 2 dads) will be arriving on Friday. We will be fishing the beach in the fort Morgan area. Last 2years we fished with fresh dead shrimp. Caught whites and sheeps. Are live shrimp a must or can we do as we have been. We have pier# booked for Sunday. Any advise will help.... Thanks
In the surf fresh dead (NOT frozen) is often as good (or sometime even better) than live.
Fresh is the key and I always peel them and use a small piece. I also change bait fairly often.
The size of the bait was something that I never realized I was messing up. I always thought that using the whole shimp was best, but then saw lots of people using small pieces with mid-sized hooks. It's a bit of a paradigm-shift for me...you are fishing for some species with relatively small mouths, so the small bits look more like the type of food they are used to eating.
Plus...you don't use as much bait :)
I use a #4 baitholder and 1/2" chunks of shrimp when surf fishing. Smaller is better for whiting.

use no roll sinkers in the surf too,(at least NOT egg sinkers) so they don't roll and move much....when I fished the beach(few times) it seemed my rigging always found it's way back closer to the beach (shore line)....correct me if I am wrong, I fish the pier almost exclusively now :D

what weight do you prefer more of?? no roll sinkers .
for the jigs last I poured were only the 3/4 oz that I prefered the best....although if using lighter tackle the 1/2 would give the same drop rate I think.
