I watched a youtube video the other day about making strip baits for spanish macks using belly strips cut from other spanish macks. The guy was pretty successful. Is it legal to use spanish for bait? If legal it's something I'd consider trying either behind a bubble rig or on a casting spoon. I don't recall ever seeing that approach taken while I was at the pier though...
Belly strips are great as stand alone baits or as tippets on jigs/sabikis and etc.
I keep and freeze belly strip when I clean Spanish for use later.
Yes Legal and deadly on axe handle Spanish. I fish with a size 6 treble and a 50# mono leader, no weight Just let it drift and give it a twitch every now and then. Tail half of an LY is almost as good.
A Asian gentleman was using Ladyfish strips on a treble under a cork and getting decent action when I was down. I couldn't understand him when I asked what his bait was so I spied on him when he re-baited... Just sayin... It worked for him..
Make sure you don't use too big a piece or the Remora will be all over it.
