Nope, its not unusual to catch small dolphin during summer, not an every-day or even every-week occurance but not unheard of. But I've never heard of one this early in the year.
He told me this morning he saw another one wiht the other one that he caught
So, it did come from the pier and it's not a fish he caught somewhere esle and just brought out there?
thats right, I talked to him
Wow...that's got to be a pier record, best Mahi
After Wieli showed me the dolphin I was telling Harley Rogers about it.
He reminded me of the one John Dotson caught in the 1980s, that was 12# or 13#.
And continued there was about about a dozen caught that day (I was not on the pier).
Most were just a few pounds, but several were nice (like 6#-8#).
They were coming in under huge sargassum mats on a strong E-W current.
The sargassum piled up so thick on the beach Gulf Shores hired bull dozers to come out on the beach and bury it.
