Spinfishers will never let you down. I wish Penn had never discontinued the Slammer line of reels. I love that reel. Shimano Saragossa is a nice reel but heavy, feels like quality in your hands though.

I like the Spinfisher.
If I was choosing one combo for general surf & sharking, I'd get a nice 10' rod & a 8000 class reel.
The aforementioned Bass Pro Ocean Masters are great deals for the money.
Can't go wrong with either Battle 8000 or Spinfisher V 7500.

My surf sharking combos are two vintage, and upgraded, Penn Spinfisher 9500SS reels, each spooled with 300 yards of 65# Sufix 832 topped with 150 yards of 50# Berkley Big Game.
These are on Offshore Angler - Ocean Master, 12' - 2pc, 20-50# line, 6-12oz lure, rods from Bass Pro.
Weight is not a concern on the beach, if not bringing in a fish they're sitting in a sand spike.
Many a Bull Red, Big Ugly & shark have had their butts dragged ashore with these.
Smaller surf combos are all Penns, Spinfishers & Battle on 7', '8 & 10' rods.
Reels vary from 4500SS to 7500SS on Spinfishers and a Battle 5000.
10# -20# line on these.
These are used for targeting Pomps, Specks, Blues, Whiting & such.

Penn Spinfisher 7500SS with 15# line on a Seeker 7' medium action is my Go-To pier rod.
My Penn Spinfisher 4500SS, 5500SS & Battle 5000 on 6.5'-7' rods see a lot of pier action too.

Look at 5'-7' standup rods for the best leverage & weight ranges.
I also fish Penns for the big boys, Penn Senators 6/0 wide, 9/0 & 12/0, all have been upgraded & modified.
Cheers Mr. g! Mr. Chile what kind of distance are you getting from the sand? I dropped down to an 8 oz. today and it looked like I was getting out about 500' or so. Wind was heavy side shore and my braid was wet so I don't know. I'm going modified Hatteras rather than Orange whip. By the way guys I love all those old setups and they worked great on the old new pier but I thought I would suggest something to Mr. Fisherman that might work better on the new new pier. Sorry guys.

I already have a 4500, could I spool that with braid backing of 50 or 100 yards,and be able to catch kings with it?
Then have a heavy combo for surf fishing.
