jmo, but as a Spheros FB user, I'd think my 4000's were too small. I'd use my 6000 or 8000.
I have a Penn Spinfisher 10' surf combo and it came with a 6500 reel. Also the 9'ers that I've used of my grandfather's for years are 8500's.
OK, its a 12' surf rod, but what is the line/lure ratings and what is the action?
Big differences between some of my surf rods, some are better for tossing 3oz of bait/weight for Pomps as far as possible and others are better for tossing 1/2 a mullet and 6oz of weight for Bull Reds and sharks.
For a Pomp rod a 5000 might suffice, for big Reds/Blacks and small sharks a 6000 or better and for taking care of anything or sheer line capacity a 8000.
My personal favorites are older Penn Spinfishers, 6500SS, 7500SS and 9500SS.
10-30lb line weight and 1-5 oz lure weight Med Hvy
i have 4 of the 4000fb and they are good reels. but, the 4000 is a bit small... i have no opinion on what reel you should use though...
spool it with 8lb or 10lb mono and you should be able to take out pomps, slots, and whiting with ease.
I use a Shimano 8000 Saragosa and a Shimano Speros 10000 with 16lb mono on my surf rods and also use them on the king rods, my 4000 series are a bit small for a big rod, I rig the 5000 for my grandson because it is lighter.
Like others have said 6500 or higher. That's a big rod, a 4000 is just too small(perfect for inshore/bass) unless the 12' is a slim diameter which still is prob rated higher line weight than the smaller reel. I'd slap my 6500 on that surf rod.
Thanks for the input fellas....heading to academy tomorrow to look around for at least a 5000
