Thread: Tying bucktails need opinions

I am learning to tie bucktails and would like a idea on what you guys think would work. Looking both off the peir and the beach. The ones in the pic are 1/4 oz heads. I can do 3/8, 1/2, and 3/4 oz. I also have red and black tails, crystal flash and flashaboo. If red jig heads would work i can do that also.

I'm a fan of 1/2 oz. white Looney Jigs. That kind of tight shiny tail and deep pearl luster.

Thanks frednic. I have seen them online and they look great. I just got my jig mold for another use and figured why not make my own for my trips south. From what i have read white and chartreuse are the go to colors for the area. Just wondering on hook sizes. The mold calls for 1/0 in the 1/4 oz, 2/0 in 3/8oz , 3/0 in 1/2 oz, and 4/0 in 3/4 oz. I can always use differnt size hooks. I more thinking for fishing the skinny water. Flounder and pomps.

"tails" look good. Any of those should work at any given time. For surf, i like the 1/4 and 3/8 ounce sizes in pink or pink/white combo colors. You might consider shortening the tails just a little for pomps, whiting, etc. They should be fine as is for flounder and other surf denizens (blues, ladygish, trout, reds, and the like). These will also catch spanish off of the pier when they are running, but you will lose your hair and feathers pretty quick. Great looking jigs, Take them to the surf, tip with a chunk of very fresh dead shrimp and see what happens.

I generally don't go lighter than 1/2. Most of the pompano jigs I tie are 5/8, even 3/4 for spanish. Saltwater fish seem to like speed and the bucktail along with the lighter weights make it harder, for me anyway, to get the action they're looking for. They look good though.

Jigslinger if you are using 5/8 to 3/4 on pomps what size hook are you using. This is kinda where i am stuck. Hard for a freash water panfishing guy to think of a 14" fish eating a 4/0 hook.

I think most of the stuff I tie are 2/0 and sometimes 3/0. Just make sure it's saltwater proof. Here's a few I tied in the last couple weeks.

I wish I could tell you. I bought those hooks about 3 years ago cheap from a guy on ebay. I think they are, or were, made by mustad. I haven't been able to find anymore
