In mid-July we will be staying and surf fishing just east of Little Lagoon Pass, Callaway Bridge. Question, how are the mosquitoes in that area at that time of year, or are they even a problem. I know on the coast of North Carolina it depends on the wind direction, and the 'no see-ums' can be a real problem.
Like you said, wind makes the difference. You will usually have a sea breeze (south) from midday forward and the mosquitoes are not bad, but if you get a north wind they will be all over you. Bring some Deet and look for the dragonflies. If you see dragonflies the mosquitoes and deer flies will be about.
The mosquitoes aren't near as bad as the no-seeums. The no-seeums seem to be the biggest problem I have over in that area.
Not to worried about the mosquitos its those biting flies "dog flies" that will tear you up. That's usually around early to mid August that they really start to show up in numbers, as frednic mentioned it is the north wind that brings everything out.
Those dog files are terrible on a north wind. Kill one and ten come to the funeral. I don't know where they come from, but if I did, I would go there and kill them all.
I must smell really repulsive to the insect world in GS/OB. I have stayed on the lagoon several times and fished there day and night without a bug bite.
Last October, we were halfway between Mobile St. and Veterans Rd. surf fishing and the dog flies or deer flies or whatever, showed up. Not a lot of them, but one bit me and after that, every time a hair on my leg moved, I slapped myself there. First time we ever noticed them. Must be smelling better the older I get.
thermacell will take care of the mosquitoes. don't know if it works on the flies or not
